I've done it; made the next commitment. I've posted the three signed rounds and now await the handicap secretaries decision.
(I almost feel that this is equivalent to confirmation, with joining the club as baptism.)

Good for you. If you get lucky (or unlucky depending on your attitude to these things) you might be pleasantly surprised how low you get put. My h'cap secretary worked it out on the best of the three cards (so I needn't have bothered with the other two?!?) and then cut the nasty 7 (reload) to a 6. Gave me 11.5, at least a shot better than my best real round to date....shan't be winning any comps for a while!!

I think it will probably be 22. OK not great but I have to start somewhere and after 1 year of golf (and already qualifying for the seniors) I don't think it's that bad.

22 is a great start.....good for you! I felt sure I could beat 95 on the 3 cards I played for 1st time around. I got 24, so you're doing better than me!

22 is fine. I started with 20 (posted a 98, 99 and 100 for my 3 rounds against a par of 70). I had rejoined and use to play off 12 so I think they gave me a bit of leeway. In my defence I played this time last year and one round was in monsoon conditions and another was in a 60 mile an hour gale. The other round was just down to the idiot holding the clubs.

Well done viscount17. After you get your handicap, you will be joining the elite members who are allowed to play in Club competitions. Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Gasp, my philosphy is keep things simple - aim too high and you'll crash but be prepared to up the ante. Therefore:

consistently below 100,
practice, practice, practice the short game and the putting,
play in competition,
break 90,
don't get so hung up on the above that I forget to enjoy it.
