The demise of the armchair referee!

I wouldn't be so sure.

The 3 items that made phones illegal as DMD's were weather apps, compasses and level functionality. Compasses and weather apps are now legal, so if your phone doesn't have level functionality, there is nothing left to deem it illegal as a DMD?

It wasn't just 3 items. If the device contains apps or sensors that could gauge or measure conditions that could assist the playing of golf it is illegal. I admit that making compasses legal does take away one of those elements but plenty still remain. Weather information via an Internet shortcut has always been allowed (this decision just clarifies it) just not in conjunction with a DMD app.

The bottom line is, the DMD rule hasn't changed, if the device contains features that could be used by the DMD app to measure or gauge real time information they are banned. Most if not all smartphones do contain these features, the DMD apps may not use them, but they are there to be used if the developer wants and so 99.9999999% of smartphones are still not allowed as DMDs
