The cost of turning pro: £25K.....

I would have said £25000 is an under estimate these days, by a long way.

yup i agree, met a lad last year who qualified for the european tour this season, last season on the challenge tour he earned approx £35k and reckons thats just about break even. and thats with dossing down with up to 8 players to a room, budget airlines and no caddy.

Fair play to him, already at €176k on the european tour this year to date!!

Sure there was a post on here about this not so long ago????

The biggest problem as I see it is the lack of media exposure for the LET which must make it difficult to attract sponsors wanting their brand to be seen.

Sounds an underestimation to me too. That would probably cover entry fees, but what about normal living expenses, £25K would probably only cover those. Then you have to add travelling to tournaments, somewhere to stay at tournaments.

It's tough - if she has the ability and talent with steel and determination she will get herself sorted.

Charley Hull managed it by produced results very quickly.

£25K is a lot of money to find if you don't have it though. It's not always only about ability. :)

If you have got drive, determination and work ethic it will happen. You ask any pro sportsperson what was most important when they were trying to make it and they will tell you hard work and determination.

In fact its like anything in life, its unlikely it will be given to you. You need to go out there and get it.

Totally agree about working for it, definitely.

I'm just saying that if you can't get the cash all the talent in the world wont get you on that plane to the Turkish open or whatever. Nothings given to you in life, but some are lucky enough to receive more of a helping hand than others do. :)

Wouldn't it be more likely that they were talking about spending hours practicing and improving their skills to get spotted/picked up etc by a club/scout or whatever who would provide playing opportunities rather than trying to scrape together £25k to PAY to play as a pro?

Perhaps she could try and put together a funding syndicate who'd invest (take a share) with a hope of a return over 10 years. But like other posters I'd reckon she'd need at least £50k to get where she needs to be and for a syndicate to achieve a return in reasonable time.

Perhaps "Cloud" funding could be another route.

Pretty sure Charley had a wealthy uncle who paid for everything so a little different!!

Got a fair bit of sponsership nice and early - turned pro with sponsers gained on the back of a hell of a lot of promise - she stood out and was always going to do well because of her ability.

Yes but had a rich relative who told her not to worry about any money. That also helps as her first year she had no sponsorship so she didn't have to worry about it preforming for a sponsor and just enjoy her golf.

Maybe the media helped out with her highlighted early on or maybe all the players either need to stand out amongst all the other or catch that one big break.

Most amatuers move up through the tours by gaining a win nice and early , a number perform well in a major pro tournament - Rose,Wood,Lewis,Lowry etc.

Perform and the money will arrive to open doors. If Hall performed in the next Womens Open then doors would open up.

Hull may have had a rich uncle but she was earmarked for success - her sheer talent would have got her onto the tour.

Thing is she got LPGA invites early which meant sponsors were getting TV exposure for their bucks. If Georgia has to ply her trade on the LET initially there is no TV coverage to speak off and no column inches. The economics of it are that sponsors want their names and logos splashed out there. She may get invites out to the US but would need to perform well or go to Q school. I'm sure she will get picked up especially if she has a stellar Curtis Cup
