Trust me, I am absolutely gutted that I never saw it when I was looking for a new car 15 months ago.Am sure the Lexus name put me off looking, but 50 mpg is better than the 36 am getting now. Just don’t have a clue how to mention it to Missis Tash.

The Lexus UX is smaller than your CX5, the LX models are more comparible. I did look at the LX before going for the CX5, but it was working out a tad too much.

All the above might make for a little bit of improved efficiency under load, but it would be minimal.

I've also been doing a bit more research and think I've found an explanation that makes much more sense:

More energy is required to haul heavier loads. Let's suppose 50% more energy is needed.

This means an EV will need to use about 50% more energy, because it's very efficient.

A diesel is far less efficient. It's wasting 80% of the fuel to heat. Of the fuel it uses, only 20% is converted to motive power. So to get 50% more motive power, it only needs to consume 50% more than the 20% of the fuel it had previously been using for motive power. In other words, 10% more fuel overall. This is the main reason for the enormous difference in range loss for EVs compared to diesels.

I think you'll find that percentage is petrol engines. Diesel efficiency is 40-50% thermal efficiency

I think that is part of the problem, the CX5 is too big. Part of the reason getting it was to ferry parents around. They struggle to climb in. couple with the fact it has been used as a flippin truck to ferry all sorts of stuff about. It has done my trolley in. The fuel economy, when I have gone from 45 mpg plus in my previous car to 36 mpg in this, it is a massive eye opener. In all honesty I have looked at the UX, but I have only half looked at the Lexus range. And again it is probably something I will give more consideration to in the future as at the moment grand parents and grandkids are time consuming.

The runnign costs and new prices are quite alarming (for the competition) and it pains me to say it.

TBH though, the CX5 is wonderful to get in and out. The rear doors open wider than any car I have come across, and as for height...if my 5ft4 wife with short ass legs and her similar height 82 yr old mother can get in easy enough then that says a lot about it

I think the problem with dad is lack of mobility, me mum, her knee op change. She cannot bend it and it is quite comical seeing her get in the car. MIL is just fat . Having said that, the Lexus is smaller in the back

Anecdotal...

Most of the mileage in my BMW 520d is just me on my own without luggage. It averages 50.7 mpg.

In the summer I went away with a couple of pals so it was carrying an additional 2 adult males, 3 sets of clubs, 3 trolleys and luggage for 3 days away. It averaged 50.4 mpg.

Yes probably silly of me to compare a 1990 basic diesel with todays modern turbo charged ones. Diesel efficiency has seen big improvements since that time

From memory my transit would do 35 mpg at best.

Mrs socks had a cx5 as a courtesy car, Jesus that was a thirsty vehicle, we got max 30-35mpg which was a shame as I quite liked the car.

I've had the ID7 for around a month now and it's great... Absolute joy to drive. Lots of tech and a world away from the ranger.. It's never going to be as practical but I can live with that.. Not driven any big distances yet but seldom do apart from weekends away a few times a year..
The heads up display is great. The only negative is working the air vents... You do it from the screen which is just unnecessary...

Mine gives me between 37 and 45mpg, and that’s the 2 ltr petrol and auto. I’m more than happy with that.

The post above this hits the nail on the head, re 95% of my time is running about, when it is distance it’s nearer 43/44. But I used to get that in the Leon when running around and nearer 57 on a run.
Learning to live with the car for a bit yet, but unfortunately it’s like looking at new shiny irons, Ave got an itch I didn’t expect to have
