The all things EV chat thread

Is there a list of which cars are eligible for the grants yet. The government should have some idea

Yes I understand that the mileage on an ICE car when bought helps someone understand the state of the engine

When buying an EV car you have no idea how the battery has been treated , the effects on the battery fron rapid charging and people’s on habits

Might be even more relevant with the cheaper Chinese EVs , I’m guessing that the quality of the battery won’t be anywhere near the level of a Tesla

You can get the battery health checked before you buy so you can get an idea of what the health is. It's probably far better than buying a used ICE car that can have all sorts of unknown issues that you can't possibly know about until you get a few hundred miles down the road.

Apparently battery degradation is around 1.8% of the initial starting range so if you had a car that did 300 miles in year 1 you'd still be getting 255 miles after 10 years. Most batteries are good for far longer than an ICE engine (all things being equal) and it's a myth that after 5 years you suddenly get a £30,000 for a new battery pack. I have been listing to LBC this morning and they were talking about the EV grant. It had all the usual types of call that talked about the range not being suitable for most (how many people do 250 miles a day?), not everyone can home charge (fair point but according to stats 70% can), depreciation is horrific (it tends to be but figures also show that after 4 years of ownership the depreciation amount between an ICE vs EV is roughly the same) and that the batteries will only be good for a few years then go to landfill (nonsense, you've been reading the Daily Mail).

I think you'd be surprised about the Chinese EV's, from what I've seen the standard of motor coming out of China is far better than any Tesla (build quality has been traditionally crap) and there's no reason to think that their batteries will be any worse.

Said on the TV that the higher grant will go to the smaller more efficient cars £3750.
What does that mean ? I thought they were all efficient!

I’m not knocking EVs I am thinking my next car will be one but there are lots of things I don’t know.
That’s why this thread is good for schooling me.

You can still get ones that are less efficient than others , I suppose they will have a minimum mile per kwh they need be.
I can honestly say I would never go back to driving an ice car. The whole EV experience is just so much better.
Cheap to charge , rapid as hell and just a smooth drive all round

I drive a 5 year old Focus

And doesn’t matter about costs because that’s not what is stopping me getting one
So a car that is virtually worthless now
Just a joke

What is the current value of the car compared to list price.

I have bought several one year old cars that have lost anything up to 50%a lot of their list price. Best deal was list price £23K bought for £12k 11months old.

Yes I like them!
My son has two I use his now and again.
I have a driveway so no charging problems.
An EV would suit me tbh.

One concern is my sons car developed a fault and was off the road for three months because of a parts issue and that was with a main dealer.

I drive a 64 plate diesel focus, book price not too much. However, it does the job, no mechanical issues so I cannot justify buying a new car , irrespective of age or fuel type. Does this mean it is actually worth a lot more as it is saving me money?

That’s pretty much standard for anything these days

Once you buy something and use it then the value will drop significantly- everything ( expect houses) depreciate in value

There are only a select amount of cars that hold value well and they will cost

So using the depreciation argument against EVs does not hold sway

Why is there a notion that China would be bad a building batteries compared to a US or European firm? Or building any tech compared to us?

It's not like China has been building tech stuff for decades or is in any way technologically advanced compared to the Western world...

Also, how does anyone know, solely on the mileage of a car how that car has been driven? Could have 2000 miles on it but 1000 of them have been redlined.

Like I mentioned to Missis T about looking at electric. I had a Seat Leon fr diesel. £20 tax. 55 plus miles on a run. Mid high 40,s normal use. Then I bloody wrote it off.
I bought a Mazda cx5 and was looking at seat again. Bottom line I am not 100% happy with it and most weeks I am putting £40 in it. The mileage is poor on the petrol. I am seriously looking at electric. I invested in Solar and they are monster for me making well over £2K a year. If I can save on petrol every week by charging an electric car do the maths on saving £140-£160 a month in Petrol.👍

It's not the potential dodgy build quality that puts me off chinese cars, it the other dodgy stuff they can get up to - don't fancy having every conversation uploaded to dodgy servers in China and used against me :)

You'll have to practice your ''smug smile'' that you can pull out every time you drive past a queue at the petrol station.
Especially when you see how much tax/VAT is charged that you won't pay...
For example...
  • Pre-tax price: 80 pence
  • Fuel Duty: 52.95 pence
  • Total price before VAT: 132.95 pence
  • VAT (20% of 132.95): 26.59 pence
  • Total price: 159.54 pence

Has this ever happened? Who's to say the current regime in another country isn't monitoring you?

I'm not sure that the CCP are all that interested in who Rab the fishmonger is diddling behind his wife's back to be honest.

So much tech is from china anyway that I'd be amazed if anyone could easily avoid it. Also at the same time we happily allow the likes of Google and Facebook to scrape all our data up

Re. Depreciation of EV's, this is from CarWow.....

"Figures from industry data compilers suggest that on average, cars retain 40% of their new value after three years or 36,000 miles. That’s about 60% of the new price lost in that time.

If you buy a car for £30,000 in 2021 that follows this trend then it will be worth £12,000 in 2024, though a chunk of this depreciation happens as soon as your name appears on the logbook and the car becomes ‘used’.

The industry is seeing strong residual values for electric cars at the moment because there is so much demand. Interest has been steadily growing as we get closer to the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales, but research suggests that the recent spike in fuel prices has accelerated EV demand.

On top of that, sales of new cars have been hit by the recent chip shortage that has affected production, pushing more buyers to the used market and driving up prices across all fuel types.

The latest figures show that electric cars retain about 49% of their value after three years or 36,000 miles, meaning they depreciate slower than the industry average."

Obviously that's just from one article however CarWow aren't a specialist EV website so have no particular reason to push those instead of ICE etc.
