The all things EV chat thread

That's crazy, you'd be daft not to. Good looking cars as well.

Just got to check with the wife. She said it looks nice so that's a start

I've broken down the figures for her , it's crazy not to like you say

That £475 factors in bik increases aswell so that'd the highest cost over the 3 years. It's also per 4 weeks not per month as we paid 4 weekly but remains the same savings for me IE having the cash for my car now

That's without having a much bigger boot , bigger space inside for the kids.. longer range and faster recharge speed so we could comfortably do long journeys in either car

Car would be here end of June

Only downside is I lose no claims after 3 years so would have to remember to swap me and wife on the Kia every year but that's minor

@Lord Tyrion update

So this year costs £435
Next year £449
2027 £463
2028.£491

So that's cheaper at first than thought

3 year term but covers those tax years

I've ordered it.
Will this be your first Skoda? You're in for a treat. They are just supremely sensible cars that do things right and don't go overboard on pointless bells and whistles.
(I'm hoping their EVs are likewise, having only experienced their ICE cars).

It will be my first yes. The reviews said has more buttons than it's VW cousin

The numbers are too good to ignore, the amount of tax I'll save coupled with the amount of extra overtime I can fit in before losing my personal allowance gives me so much more wiggle room

The size of the boot is fantastic and the back seats will give the kids a little bit more room

Wife's car is tiny compared to mine. So it's a second bigger car

Give it a month or so and it won’t be the second car anymore 😂

If you get a new one, that’s not the current shape anymore.

We are looking to get a 2024 Enyak later this year. For used ones 2024 is the generation which preheats the battery for charging and is taking the newest software.

Yeah I'm not sure what shape it is as it was in stock new, could be this shape and been sitting there unused or could be the new one. Not too fussed but newer would be better

Lol I do love the niro but I could be swayed

OHME and OVO

It looks like they have had some sort of falling out so I need to change energy supplier in July.

I have worked out that Octopus and OHME will work together .

I am asking if any body has experience of OHME with their supplier .

Note; I drive a Peugeot and for some it is not on their list of compatible cars with their system e.g. Scottish Power.

Moved to Octopus, my mate had to (if you do want I have a referral code you can use to get £50 each)

However ohme and octopus work hand in hand

OVO have got rid of them because it doesn't suit what they want to do. Octopus however are keeping them

Octopus intelligent puts your day rate up by 5p but your nights 7p and the car will charge from that

However they now do a normal tariff so normal day rate with unlimited charging for £30 pcm .. however that's car only no house

If you load shift then normally intelligent is what you need

octopus.energy/smart/intelligent-drive-pack/ https://share.google/sPCabHtrnHt7Ep89s

Intelligent Octopus Go | Octopus Energy https://share.google/Uj42O5b0Ar7fmrMmE

Those are the two

My referral if you do switch is

Use this link to sign up to Octopus - https://share.octopus.energy/jade-skunk-514

Don't feel obligated, just gets you £50 credit aswell

I did a lot of reading on the Octopus site. It was the higher gas rate I noticed (my main expenditure on power). Day rate for elec was about the same as other companies (probably a regional thing).
Not really bothered about the overnight rate for other uses as I would never use it for things like washing due to the noise.

Noticed that British Gas was about the cheapest except for the daily charge, same deal for overnight as Octopus.

See the CEO of Toyota is bemoaning the environmental validity of Full EV cars against Hybrids. Strange that someone who runs a company making EV's would get on his high horse about it
Toyota's strengths is in their hybrids, they are the world leader in them. Bit of a vested interest there then. His point is valid, imo, in that we should be transitioning to hybrids first of all and then onto EV once EV's have got their act together much better than they have now.

Consider though that Toyota have been majoring in hybrids for years as also are developing hydrogen fuel cells for a long time as well. They have only started to do pure EV because they had to really, so it makes you wonder really.

Yesterday surprised me. A colleague of mine lives 5 miles from work so a 10 mile trip a day (compared to my 50 round and others 100 miles round he's tiny) he drives a battered old Corsa ATM. However since he passed he wants to get an EV. Looking at the MGs 250-300 range. £300 pcm on that scheme with everything.. now here is the surprise ... He doesn't have a driveway. He says the garage he uses has one that's 79p a unit and the one near work is aswell. He reckons he can top up the car once a month and do a month's worth of to and from work (garage is a 5 mins walk from home so can leave it there or same near work) even tho that cost unit is ridiculous he is willing to do it because it's the same as now filling up once a month and he gets a better car out of it

If he only does 10 miles a day, that isn't a tough decision. He barely needs a car if he is only charging it once a month.

I've sat down with about 10 people at work to price up deals with them , even the biggest sceptic's have come round. One guy refuses to ever drive a new car and thinks the prices of all cars are ridiculous. I agree but that's life now

We broke down his figures

£300 diesel to get to work a month
£200 tax
£400 insurance
£250 a year tyres (going on 1 set every 2 years at £500)
£250 minimum service
£50 MOT

Just keeping the figures simple for his calculations that's £4750 a year without asset depreciation of his current car.

£500 a pay period car would cost him £6500 a year.. plus £30 a month charging on octopus anytime charge unlimited. That's £6860 a year total costs

His car depreciation will be about £2000 a year if not more so he breaks even and can get a brand new car.

He still can't get his head around not owning the car but when you break down the figures he finally gets out of the grumpy refusing to listen mode (that's not a slight on people who don't want EVs he is just very grumpy lol)

Just looking at a nearly new ID3. They seem to be quite expensive and the dealers aren’t engaging with any haggling (currently) . What was interesting was one vehicle which was 7-8 months with around 3000 miles had a battery health state of 94%. VW have an 8yr 100k warranty on batteries. You can get it replaced when it’s below 70% on this warranty.
But I felt that was too big a degradation for such a small mileage/ young car.
I will double check other cars .. but we were looking at the 58/59 kWh .. so perhaps we should direct our attention towards the 77kWh cars as their range would still be more than 230miles if depleted.

Dealers are the brightest , some rest health state as charge state.. that car could simply be 94% charged
