The all things EV chat thread

Whilst he may know. The obd also displays state of charge

Many dealers have made this mistake
I can imagine, we were discussing the battery change from 58 to 59kWh .. I asked if this was a new battery or a software update. The true battery is 62kWh .. so I wanted to know if the battery part numbers differed, if they did then it’s a new battery, if not then it’s a software or new hardware to manage charging discharging.
Anyway today I will try to learn more and annoy more dealers ..

Well my order has been approved and moved onto "on order" rather than pending approval (everyone thought TFL wouldnt keep up with demand and tuskers policy that all paperwork must be signed within 48 hours if ordering an instock car, but they managed)

so the car should be here within the next few weeks. I now must take the private plate off the wifes car before selling.

been reading more into our scheme. seems very reasonable. excess is a standard £250 for my age which isnt unreasonable on the insurance. The tyres they deal with kwikfit so if your tread drops below 2mm they just replace them for you. just book yourself into kwikfit and they will pay it.

I can get a charger installed by them. Now im not sure if to bother.. I have a charger.. if I had a second installed I could tech charge 2 at once but would need to limit them to half speed to keep under the 80amp fuse so seems a bit pointless. Ive never needed to charge 2 at once and always have 3 pin charger if it was the case.

id like it to arrive before we go on our cruise. Only because its a 250 mile drive total so wouldnt need to factor in any charging, considering its under 2 hours each way the kids would make it anyways. wouldnt need that much a charge in the kia, quick top up. However the bigger boot would also mean we can fit even more cases lol.

need to find out if we can have 2 cars on lease at the same time via the scheme. dont get me wrong I love my kia but that said if I have the final fee (22k) sitting in the account for it when it comes around leasing another car would be tax effiecent and could just least the same car again.

keeping my eye out for the EV5 release from kia. that is my next car after the skoda due to the size of it compared to the EV9 which is massive. Long as the kids have space im golden

Just looking at a nearly new ID3. They seem to be quite expensive and the dealers aren’t engaging with any haggling (currently) . What was interesting was one vehicle which was 7-8 months with around 3000 miles had a battery health state of 94%. VW have an 8yr 100k warranty on batteries. You can get it replaced when it’s below 70% on this warranty.
But I felt that was too big a degradation for such a small mileage/ young car.
I will double check other cars .. but we were looking at the 58/59 kWh .. so perhaps we should direct our attention towards the 77kWh cars as their range would still be more than 230miles if depleted.
Best way to know battery degradation is to charge it fully and check through obd exact amount of kWh.
My tesla loosing a little bit in the winter but somehow getting it back when its warmer.
My battery was 60kWh when new, did almost 60k in 2.5 years and fully charged still have 57.78 kWh

Have Tusker improved?
They offered a "favourable" scheme through my employer a few years ago. I checked it out thoroughly and found non-negotiable list prices and higher interest rates than you'd get walking into a dealership.

I can't see any interest rates, the prices are ok, higher than expected however with the cost of insurance for me and tax on the car being £600 plus the savings just add up

Plus it keeps me out of the 60% tax bracket which allows for more overtime before having to pay the tax man again

Don't have a choice either, it's them on buy myself lol

Thinking about changing the Golf R for something more sensible over the next few months in time for retirement in December. Need something that will fit a muddy dog in the back some days and gardening equipment on others.
I had a shortlist. Just popped into the Skoda dealer in Mansfield to see the Elroq. It has immediately shot the top of the list and I might not look any further. It's nice.

Test drove an Elroq today.
Love everything about it except the way it drives, which is obviously something of a dealbreaker.
Possibly my most underwhelming test drive in over 30 years of car buying.

EV or Elroq specific way it drives?
I'm not sure. I have been a passenger in EVs but this was my first drive.
Braking was very soft and spongy.
Steering felt a bit vague, which is disappointing as it's RWD.
I had hoped that the nausea I get as an EV passenger wouldn't occur when I was driving, but it did.
I thought I was ready to take the plunge but maybe not.

Brakes are usually spongy if they have just used regen all the time, as the disc and pads go off or “green” .. so you have to do a few big stops and use the foundation braking.
As for steering, some times the power steering is tuneable so there might be an option in the menu to change it. Or you could ask to try a bigger wheel option which might give you a bit more direct feeling but you will get more noise and road texture.

I possibly watched every Enyak video on YouTube and one Swiss guy recommended to once in a while when leaving the Autobahn, when save to do so, to put it on neutral and therefore force the mechanical break to slow the car down. I think the same would work on a full battery anyway because it only regenerates when there is space in the battery.

But it sounds more like a general EV problem rather than the brakes not working. Skoda is supposed to have very little regen as choice? I guess if it is a test drive they want to show of the ‘best’ of it, and that doesn’t seem to work well on everyone. Or I confuse that with one pedal driving. One of them the Skoda fans wanted more off but the low setting of it is supposed to work well with gas car drivers.

I always wonder how much difference regeneration really makes. If you have a 60 kWh battery, died it drive like a 63 kWH one? Or a 66?
My e-moped has a 4 kWh battery and does regen. Not sure it is worth anything and not just a box ticking exercise.

When I worked at JLR it was the HEV RR sports that the managers had I used to be called out to sort out. I kind of realised then that JLR was a sinking ship as these managers were not car guys, they were clueless, no passion. But I just took their cars to the brake straights and just did some big stops. If I had more time and I was bored I would go off around Warwickshire and give the car a good shake down.
We were introducing low metal pads or NAO pads and they behaved slightly differently and required disc interaction. Now NAO is pretty much on everything. We discussed “wipe” functions etc but other things that may also be at play are piston roll back in the calliper .. they try to pull these back as far as possible so you don’t have contact of pad on disc.
The other one is the hoses and whether there is any flexi tubes on the lines … which can cause spongy problems or delays .. The brakes NVH team did this to one of the benchmark cars which was a cayenne turbo .. no one knew till we got in a big stop.

So the delivery date for the Skoda has been said as "late July" not long really. Have taken the private plate off the wife's car. Got it ready to sell. My sister has expressed an interest so she gets first refusal at discount ofc.

Had a play around with it last night. Ohme updated their app a few months ago so I can select between EVs on the app. That way it tracks the cost for each car..knows the size of each battery so when you ask for a % it knows how much to deliver. So I signed into it with the konas app details. Changing it slightly. Now it knows how much battery it has when a charge starts so you set to "I want this %" the massive upside of this is it wakes my wife's car so now the Kona can smart charge (as tested last night) which means my sister can smart charge and save more money on it. Just need to see if it suits her size wise. Coming from a 2013 Yaris so similar.

I can get an ohme installed via my lease deal. Wouldn't it be brilliant if they could install at her house instead of mine 😂

Kia booked in for it's first proper service in September when it hits 20k miles then won't need to service for another 2 years (or 20k miles but I see it's milage dropping slightly with the Skoda being used for family stuff)

Do like the sound of the massage seat for the driver in the skoda. Should make long journeys a breeze. Bought another adapter for the golf club so I can have one in each car aswell. Make things easier.

Only thing I don't like about the Skoda is the lack of "frunk" I find the kias one the perfect size to shove the charging cable I use the most.

Are you not familiar with the old adage "never sell a car to friends or family"?

Even when we gave my wife's previous car to our daughter as a GIFT problems came back to bite us! 🤣

Ah na not in my family lol

My first car was a hand me down from my mum

Few years ago .. well 8 now they gave me a civic (I offered to pay) as My second car and when I upgraded I gave it to my aunt as her car was broken

Sold cars to guys at work before

I love tempting fate

One of the very useful EV features is the abilty to pre cool the car in the summer. It sounds like a hovercraft 😂 but its so nice to get into a car thats not oven temps inside.

Can't remember the last time I got into my car and hadn't set up the remote climate control

Winter it's 22 degrees to get it toasty
Height of summer 17 to get it cool
Rest of time 19-20 to take the edge off

Gets the car in the most efficient way to drive for the journey aswell
