I actually sat in on this press conference and was as astounded as everyone else that Lyle's 'advisers' even let it go to questions. Sandy might has well have had a large spade beside him to keep on digging the vast hole into which any slim RC captain's hopes have now fallen.

However, for me the best part of the whole press conference was when he said "from now on I'm just going to let my golf clubs do the talking". Couldn't help but think that, this year's Masters aside, his clubs haven't really been saying very much for 10-15 years now!

Having played a round with Sandy (Scottish open pro-am at Gleneagles in 1986) I can honestly say he is one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet. I was only 17 at the time, Sandy took plenty of time to talk to all his fellow players and gave plenty of tips on the way round, he even gave me a quick 30 min coaching session on the practice ground afterwards.

Can't help but feel he has been shafted over this whole Ryder cup captaincy affair, his comments will almost certainly rule him out for the future.

I would say so, but it appeared that he had been missed out anyway for whatever reason, all I have ever heard are good things about Sandy and imo he should have been captain instead of Mrs Doubt.. I mean Monty. You feel they could have left Monty till the next one especially as he still thinks (and possibly only him) that he can still win events and get on the team.

But yes sadly sandy seems to be the only one of europes big players of that era not to be asked, after the abuse Sir Nick got, you kinda wonder why anyone would want it.

Agree with Edgey.....not sure which one of them is the biggest plonker.....sandy or monty.....monty or sandy??? :D

There's only one way to find out...........

;)

Haha.......fight fight fight fight fight

Although Sandy is only a middleweight compared to Superheavyweight Monty.

unfair, it's just that Monty's already got his sumo suit on

Reminds me of the rumpus that Thomas Bjorn caused a few years back when he was overlooked for the RC team by Captain Woosie who picked Westwood and/or Clarke above him.

So far up their own behinds these pros, think they are so important. Newsflash....You're not!!!

I think Gary Evans has been in the press today adding his voice (he was the players representative for years - think Bjorn took over) and he said much the same about Monty being permanently tarnished a cheat now andt hat he thought tour players have been getting away with rules infringements for years (he highlighted McIlroy kicking the sand).

As I've said I've alot of time for Lyle and do think he was shabbiliy treated not to be offered the RC earlier (once he retired) but these comments will make sure he doesn't get it at all now.

I think Lyle has a point, he's never had the recognition he deserved compared to the other major winners like Faldo and Woosnam.
I think they should have to win the right to be Ryder cup captain that would stop the sulking, what did the do with the thunderdome when Mel Gibson was finished with it?

Am I missing something, or is everyone else?

Why on earth does anyone think that because someone excels in what they do, that automatically qualifies them to go that one step further whether in business (I'm sure that we have all come across the person who has been promoted above their effective level based on past performance) or in sport e.g. athletes becoming commentators, footballers becoming golf gurus, golfers becoming RC captains, etc.

Admittedly we have had some great RC captains in the past but being a good golfer does not necessarily make a good captain.

Some of you may remember Mike Brearly. In the late 70's he was selected for the England cricket team. He was not the best batsman in the country, in fact his average score in test matches was less than 23, but it was his man management skills that, to my mind, made him one of the best team captains I have seen. OK he did have the advantage of being able to call on the services of Botham and Willis, but he had the necessary skills to motivate them and the rest of the team.

Surely the RC captaincy is more important from the point of trying to win than just being a "well done in the past, old chap - have this poisoned chalice".

Shoot me down in flames if you wish but, to my mind, Faldo was never going to be a motivator, nor is Monty, nor would be Lyle. Good golfers, yes. Captains, no.

Its just another bitch fight to me, becomming RC captain is as much about face fitting as it is about ability and record. It matters not how good you are or may be, if you ruffle the wrong feathers in this game you can forget it.

I dont think Lyle is an angel of the game, and monty certainly isnt, what is always clear though, is the way those at the top dont want to hear about any dirty washing no matter how true it may be.

He's back on stirring it again! I'm with Torrance here.....shut the hell up and move on,like an old woman Lyle whining and whining!

Better still let's just get a boxing ring on the last after Sundays finish and let them go at each other...pair of fannies.

well he isn't going to make the cut while Monty still could.
as far as I'm concerned good job too, he's brought it all on himself.

as for Monty, he's more self-destructive than destructive
