Tennis and Snooker Players

I would say that tennis players wouldn't want the added friction grip as they often rotate the racquet for different shots so that may make it more difficult to spin the handle at will.
Snooker players I would say it's because there is no fast action in the cue action that requires a great deal of friction grip.

Just a mixture of opinion and a blind guess mind, but I reckon it sounds plausible.
 
There are players using gloves to play pool and snooker.
I say gloves more a thumb and finger.
