Also don't use tees on shortish par 3's

Good for you. I admire anyone with the bottle to do this.
Whenever I just chuck a ball down, I get a horrid lie!
I use broken wooden tees on the short holes or a standard plastic one down to 2 or 3 mm.

I don't because the tees get trashed.
Maybe if they were just sand?

I don't use tees on short par 3s, I find a nice lie and place it down on there. If of course there is nowhere suitable or I can't be bothered to look I put it on a broken tee. I just can't strike an iron well off of the tee. I always hit it above the meat of the club and loose a lot of distance. I seem to automatically hit up on the ball even if it is teed up just off the floor, which is why my approaches to par 3s are always worse than to other holes off of the fairway. I'm working on this at the moment though.

Got teh Zero Friction tees with a golf mag-i find them very flimsy and not as easy to insert into the ground as the bog standard wooden tee.

I also use broken tees on par 3's.

Personally i detest plastic tees-no particular reason.

I also have this thing about plastic tees. They are inherantly wrong.

I always tee up irons on par 3s, just enough to get a preferential lie.

Even Tiger tees up on par 3s. If it is good enough for him, it is good enough for me. I still take a divot though, so I can't see why using a tee would be better for the tee box.

I normally only use broken wooden tee's on the longer par 3's. Anything 6 iron or longer as I find it easier to middle the club. 7 iron or shorter I will manage off the deck if its a nice lie.

Only time i'll tee up mid or short irons is if the tee is really poor, I.E solid mud!

. . . and why is it mud?
Presumably nothing to do with the lumps being taken out of it

Nothing wrong with taking a lump, its people not replacing them or the club not dishing out enough divot mix!

All I use now is the Zero Friction tees, with the driver they fly off nice and easy, but with par 3's I always place the ball off the ground, tee's and irons are not a good mix for me.

Firstly the tees at my course are Quite lush.
There is nothing macho about not using a tee on a short par 3, I find it helps with the "stop"
Yes I do take a shallow divot from the tee box but ALWAYS repair my mark with the soil and seed mix from the boxes.
I also repair a couple of other divots that the other members make (and use tees in doing so) and NEVER repair.

And, how can someone take a divot on a long par 4 tee box when it is teed up and they use woods. In some cases it is so deep that I don't know how they get their ball away.

May I also add that I replace my divots on the fairways and other fresh ones that I come across, again made by experienced members that couldn't be ar$ed to bend down and pick it up, probably because the weight of their wallets prevent them from straightening back up.

Also I repair MY and OTHER pitchmarks on greens again produced by experienced members and not repaired for same reason as above.
I once repaired 17 (yes seventeen) pitchmarks on a green of a par 3.
It makes my blood boil as these are the same people who complain about the greens being bobbly.

They should put the subs up a couple of quid and supply everyone with a pitchmark repairer and then check to ensure that they have it in their pockets before being allowed to tee off.

Rant Over!!!!

when I first started to play the game seriously, i found it hard to take a consistent divot, so I never used a tee for iron shots. Only for driver.

By making myself play the tee shots off the deck, it helped me to learn how to take a proper divot quicker, now I have no problem at all. I think should I have carried on using tee's I would have been thinning the ball for a lot longer!
