Didn't want to hijack the tee height thread but it got me thinking about the tees inuse and why I use them. I have the pink castle type for the driver as it just happens to be the right height for me. Other than that I use plastic standard tees for anything else and just adjust the height. I have a large bag of wooden tees but never use them for some reason. So why do people use the wooden tees? I often find the tee box littered with broken wooden tees and just wondered why people use them? I can use the same 2 tees for weeks/months without any real additional effort to locate them after the shot. Obviously money isn't the issue as tees are really cheap but it just seems wasteful to hit a wooden tee once and throw it away?

As you can tell it's a slow day for me today :D

Look matey ... cancel this thread immediately ..... how do you think I get the little wooden tees to play all my iron/ fairway woods off??

Slow day, or not, find a different subject cos this is going to cost me money!

Wood is an ecologically sound renewable resource when properly managed... plastic never can be. I doubt that your castle tees are recylced in any way whatsoever... and when you lose or break them I doubt you drop them in the nearest recycling unit for whatever plastic they are actually made from in the first place.

Wood also biodegrades so you're not littering the course with something that will take centuries to disappear.

And finally if a mower blade hits a wooden tee it will shatter it. Plastic wont do that... it's more likely to jam the machinery or at least blunt it.

:D the chances of anyone taking any notice of what I have to say are pretty slim so I think you'll be ok for tees for awhile yet mate. The other thing I find weird is tees left sticking in the ground that are perfectly fine? Why?

Jonny - I take your point but if I use the same 2 plastic tees for say 10 rounds is that really any worse than 100 wooden ones?

As an aside go into your signature and remove the quote from it will you? Ta

I use the wooden tees as I can get a 1000 of them for less than a tenner, tell me thats not good value.

I buy long wooden tees for my driver, not stupid long but a couple of inches. I break probably 2 or 3 a round and us the broken bits for tee shots with other clubs.

For some reason, plastic just seems wrong.

My apologies, sig should be sorted now. I may try the wooden tees on my next round and see if I like it. Just always used plastic without much thought as to why really.

You tell me. In order to obtain the plastics for your 2 tees you need to drill, pump, refine and so on a volume of oil. That's a non-renewable resource which is not being recycled as a part of your plastic tee usage. They also do not degrade and once in the soil of your course will in all probablility stay there for several hundred years.

On the other hand the use of 100 or so wooden tees requires the growth of a tree which is an entirely renewable resource and biodegrades. And in all probability you'll reuse the broken ones on short shots anyway so you'll probably only use 3 or 4 a round at most. I tend to snap perhaps 2 in a round of golf.

As golfers we should be more aware of the ecological impact we have on the surroundings we play in as the more we abuse the more chance there is that these materials we use will have an impact on our playgrounds.

Courses are already starting to be more aware of the chemicals they use on the course and are leaving more areas in a natural state to cope more efficiently with the things we spray the places with... should we not do the same thing and be more aware of the impacts of using something plastic and considered disposable whilst playing?

I always used to use wooden tees becasue that's what I saw pros using - the stupidity of youth. I'd even go through the mixed box of colours in the pro shop and pick out the white ones :o

I had even convinced myself that I didn't like the fell of hitting from a plastic tee... utter cobblers.

Now I use castles for driver and wooden scraps for the rest. Means I can just shove it in the ground and know it's the height I want without any messing about.

Re Jonny's comment about wooden tees having better environmental credentials. That all makes perfect sense but I'd be amazed if that's actually many people's reason for choosing them. I think wooden tees remain one of those traits/affectations/habits that come under the heading "what good players do" so everyone just keeps on doing it!

I use the pink castle tees for my driver and the tiny little orange one just less than a cm for my rescue and irons. I never really thought of the ecological or carbon footprint of my tees before. I remember seeing an article about making the wooden ones with less waste by making the top part and the spike seperate. Do they make wooden castle tees? I can't remember seeing any. I may have to find a wooden variation of my plastic ones now!

The little orange ones are hard to get hold of so started using the broken tips of wooden tees lying around.

And you know what... I agree that's probably exactly why most people do it!

Jonny - again difficult to argue with that but I'll give it a go...

What about the carbon footprint of manufacturing and transporting the wooden tees that don't last as long as the plastic ones? As a figure plucked out of the air, what if 10x as many wooden tees need to be manufactured and transported as plastic ones? Are the trees being used to make the tees being replaced?

Airlie. Whilst I can see what you're getting at I can only imagine that the tees we use come from sustainable sources. Particularly those on the link I provided above.

I'd be more than happy to switch to wooden tees if I was sure it was more environmentally friendly. I'm just not 100% convinced at the moment.
