Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

Congrats to the OP, for a new poster this has to be the most commented thread.

All he needs to do now is talk about GPS or custom fitting.

Congrats to the OP for still being here. The way some people have insulted him I wouldn't blame him for thinking that this was like most other internet forums and not bothered logging in again.

Still, there have been a few posts relevant to the original one.
At least you don't have to start a thread entitled "What's the best way to lower my scores?"

For what it's worth Tim, I wouldn't take your machines readings as gospel. I had a go with one of them after I'd had a club fitting using trackman and they weren't the same figures.
I'd just use it relative to itself so you know if whatever you're doing is helping or not.

Sorry Tim but I think you are talking pish. Simple as. One minute its hit it as fast as you can to get it as far as you can (we'll forget that will lose accuracy whether you are a tour player or a 40 year old without many 18 hole rounds under his belt). Then you say its about control and accuracy with your irons. Well the big news is irons aren't built for excessive speed and accuracy will go again.

The word I think seems to have been deleted from your golfing dictionary is tempo. That is what the top players have. Look at Woods. Even in his prime swinging flat out he was a poor driver and relied on his short game and putting to save hime.

It you want power learn control. There is something called tour tempo by a guy who studied top pros and whatever speed they swung at (fast like Woods or slow like Couples/Els) they all had a 3:1 tempo where the backswing swas 3 times slower than the backswing. That is where power comes from not some idiot with a gadget that has no measurable calibration swinging like a wild thing. http://www.tourtempo.com/

As it stands your comments only make you look a fool. The best golfers on the forum have said you are wrong as have the pors we have. What will it take for the penny to drop. Of course you could man up and come on a GM Forum meet and show us how far AND straight you hit it and how well you control the irons. Fancy the challenge?

thought you might have cooled off overnight Homer, he's been taking a bit of stick you know :D ;)

Its an opinion. You're still relatively new here and this isn't stick. Homergate was stick! To be honest I don't think the guy is doing himself any favours (when in holes etc) but I'd love him to sign up and come on a GM meet and prove me wrong. If he hits it regularly 280+ yards on average and straight and straight his dinner and drinks are on me and I'll chuck in a dozen Pro V

I am with you Homer, I've been playing long enough to know what makes a good golfer.
I've been waiting most of the evening for you to turn up again ;)

Okay chaps I will leave it there. Many thanks for your contributions. I will report back next week in my quest for 120mph.

There is obviously some disagreement as to the value of distance (well, mainly me disagreeing with you). But I think that it is undeniable that a fast clubhead speed won't magically appear out of thin air, but has to be practiced (tempo, technique, physical conditioning).

Admittedly, i couldn't be bothered to read all the posts even after i made one myself many pages ago.

I got the impression the OP was about how the poster thought he swung the club faster than he actually does and wants to increase his swing speed. A lot of people overestimate how fast their swingspeed is, which is what i thought the OP was about.

I've probably missed a lot of interesting discussion on the pages i didn't read........ :)

So you don't fancy a GM meet then?

As the only person not to comment on this thread, i would just like to say zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I agree and even more so considering that most people who have thrown the insults can hardly shoot below 80 themselves!

Speed and length of drives IS the key to golf regardless of what anyone wants to say. if you don't have enough power to play the course then you're fecked.

At 5 ft. 5 in. and weighing 120 pounds, LPGA Tour Pro Lorena Ochoa's average drive is 271 yards. Probably longer than most of the people who have commented about taking 50yrs off their drives!

If you CAN'T swing hard then you HAVE to learn to be accurate... but if you CAN swing hard then swing your socks off!!

This thread has certainly turned into a comedy festival.

All I can say is, this piece of kit is probably the best £109 I've ever spent on golf. I previously thought I was swinging fast but was somehow compromised by poor contact preventing the ball travelling as far as I wanted. Now I know the lack of distance is caused by a lack of club head speed (both irons and driver). I can now tailor my swing to incorporate speed, instead of hoping that it magically appears at some time in the future.

For anyone who hasn't tried, I would recommend you give it a go and see how different it is swinging at 110 compared to sub 90.

Enjoy!

OK guys and gals, call me a cynic if you wish - Oi, don't all shout at once  - but didn't the links take a long time in coming? :D :D

It's ego.
And I also believe it's the fastest way to scratch, since hitting a PW onto the green is a lot easier than hitting a 5 iron onto it.

Started as an interesting thread and got bored but this sticks out to me.

If the difference between you achieving an increase from 250 to 290 yards means you can take PW instead of 5 iron into the green, then I think you need to spend more time on your irons mate! ;)

Wow,
11 pages of comments! Someone is doing something right if atention is good for ego, and maybe not for the OP.
I'm 100% sure 290 and straight is better than 250 and straight.
I can not knock Tim for trying to do this. Big Jack advises new players to hit far first!
Granted it may not work without a lot of work on technique and in the gym (to build the right stuff and prevent injury).
Good luck and I hope that there is not a road at the end of your range!

I preferred the post where he asked "would you rather: hit it straight and 220 or straight and 290". Obviously there's no happy medium.

It's must be great having "tour swing speed" but if you're not practicing tour hours then you'll never keep it straight. Seen Tiger lately? Imagine driving like that but not having his scrambling ability.

Again, what courses will we amateurs play regularly to require 290 drives and with it a wedge distance of, what, 150?
