Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

Oh and 37 points is very useful as it means you've beaten your handicap - something you have to do very regularly if you want to get to scratch.

I'd rather have 36 points and play off scratch.

But you have to shoot many, many, many 37 pointers to be able to score 36 off scratch.

Thanks Imurg - that's an interesting article. The graph at the top shows that I'm about spot on with distance and clubhead speed - 250 yards, approx 95mph. And it shows that if I want 290 yards I need a clubhead speed of about 115mph.

That's all I've been saying.

FWIW - the reason I don't have a handicap yet is that I don't play much golf on the course. I consider playing 18 holes with one ball a complete waste of practice time. 4 1/2 hours walking a course hitting 36 long shots and 36 putts, compared to 500+ shots on the range in the same time.

When I do play on the course I use my club's short course which is normally empty in the evenings) and spend time practicing various approach shots, chips and putts, and all from differing lies - sometimes 50 shots a time. This is fast-track golf, and I love it! (but want more (distance)).

Unfortunately hitting the same club one after the other is not an option on the course hitting driver then iron then wedge or putter is what golf is all about. You have to be able to hit all different shots from many different positions to get to scratch. On the range it takes me around 8-10 balls to find my rhythm with the irons then I can hit 5 iron after 5 iron and never feel like I will miss hit them. Take it to the course though and I struggle to hit two good shots in a row. That is what I need to work on which I can do on the range but by changing clubs every shot and playing a round in my head not by flailing away with driver for an hour at a time.

If you want to get to scratch you need to play the course and learn course management and shot selection don't fall into the trap of becoming a great range player as you cant get a handicap on the range.

I don't doubt that one little bit. However, playing a round of golf teaches course management, not swing technique. I'm still in the swing technique stage of my golf development.

Personally I see nothing wrong with timgolfy's ideas as golf is an individual sport and we can choose how to try to improve in our own way.

Those speaking of his attitude should have a look at their own, all I've seen is constant attacks on someone fairly new by a gang of more established members. I doubt I'd have stayed as measured as Tim has thus far. People have taken this far too personal when it could've easily stayed on the debate of distance.

People usually come onto a forum like this asking for advice or opinions which is what I and plenty of other have given.

Yes you should never work on your swing on the course but also you should not see past the fact that golf is about getting the ball in the hole in the least number of shots. The best way to keep this in your mind is to play regularly and work on the parts of your game that you are losing the most shots on in between rounds. A good rule of thumb is 70% practice on shots from 120 yards and in and 30% practice on shots over 120.

Can't believe I've sat and wasted an hour of my life reading this thread....

What a completely pointless thread.

I feel rather left out now.... Ok I can drive it 320 average and can smash my pitchig wedge 190yards.... Not only that, i have a swingspeed of 137mph....

Ahhhh feel much better now :)

Just seen Johnson and Donald on the 8th at Doral.
Johnson's drive carried past where Donald's finished.

Johnson flew the green with his 2nd, Donald laid-up.

Johnson pitched on and 2 putted for a par
Donald played from 100 yards or so to 4 feet and holed for a birdie.

Moral:- You don't need to hit it as far as Dustin Johnson to be number 3 in the world.

As for Homer - why would I want to spend my time on a course with a person who advertises his own golf blog and who celebrates mediocrity (for someone who wants to hit scratch, wtf use is 37)? I think I would rather have a testicle removed.

If you're happy with 230 and straight then I have news for you. You are highly unlikely to succeed in your quest for scratch. At some time you need to learn to hit the ball a longer. Or just bury your head in the sand. :D

Firstly it's about getting to single figures and not scratch. I've no pretentions like you that I'me even remotely good enough. Secondly, look around, there are others on here all doing the same thing. Are they wrong too?

Secondly matey time to put up or shut up. Anyone can be a hero at a range and hell I probably am scratch at mine (in my own mind at least :) :D :p) but golf is about 18 holes (full course not a par 3) and getting it done with one ball and one chance. I'm up for a game anytime anywhere for whatever you want. How about £100 and the loser donates it to a cancer charity or help for heroes.

Come back to me when you grow a pair so we can get it on and we'll see if 230 and straight beats an egomaniac hacking from the rough. It'll make a good golfing experiment if nothing else.

Blimey! You are damned good at talking up a fight! But wouldn't you rather wait to see a video before you part with your cash?

Come back when you're in single figures and I will consider it. No point otherwise.

No I'm happy now. What difference will a video make. It'll only show me what you've got (or not) on the day. I'm ready even though I'm nearly off 13 now and can't chip. I'll trust my ability to play 18 holes and not hit off a mat all the time as my joker.

Anyway chances are if we wait for me to get back to single figures we'll both be too old anyway and they'd have found a cancer cure (god if only!). You say you think you're off about 12 (according to your posts here) so we'll go off level. I'm free most weekends but if I need to travel obviously I'll need some notice.
