Supplementary Cards

So just to clarify, a handicap maintained via supplementary cards only is still an official competition handicap?

Apologies if I've misunderstood but I thought you were saying this was changing?
Sorry I was meaning it was something I see changing in future

To maintain a HC can be through supplementary cards only currently

Hit the nail on the head there. Unfortunately, when people have been doing something one way, for so long, they think it is the only way, and the right way. Hence why golf as a sport has so many issues, and is probably one of the least welcoming sports to get involved in!!!

It's a shame to read posts like this.

Where have you been for the past 5 years? The game has made great strides to improve its image, ie. Junior golf has come on in leaps and bounds, lots of clubs relaxing dress code rules etc, etc.

A competitive handicap as a member of a golf club is a fundamental part of the game of golf. To suggest the game has issues because of it is ludicrous. If folk can't accept that then maybe try something else.

As for having a handicap to gauge ability, then its very easy to do - just work out stableford scores, check CSS and take it from there.

Unless of course you would like a true reflection of your playing ability against the course, playing off white tees, no gimmies and playing to the rules of golf in either a Stableford or Medal Competition.

With regards to the new changes for supplementaries in 2016, the article in golf monthly says this 'from January, supplementary scores may be returned at all clubs of which the player is a member. In addition players in cat2 and above may submit 9hole scores'

Does this mean cat1s can do supplementaries again? (They were removed 3 years ago)

???

Cat 1 I understand can only do supplementary cards to keep an active HC

As Phil highlights they are there for cat 1 to retain (c) status and, as such, rules exist that include not being able to submit them early in the handicap year - I think it's only from Sept and until 3 scores in total have been submitted.

Well, I play golf with a card in order to reduce my handicap, whether a formal medal or an occasional supplementary. I don't care about a voucher in the pro shop or a trophy. The pressure on me to play well is pretty much the same in both. Arguably, at my course anyway, supplementaries are tricker because you are always playing against SSS, which is 71, whereas CSS will rise to 72 or even 73 far more often than it reduces.

I don't recognise this idea of supplementaries as a vehicle for players to pad out their handicaps. They can do precisely the same in formal competitions.

As far as clubs thinking they know better, they really don't and should be required to publicise and administer the supplementary card system properly our lose their right to issue handicaps which will be recognised anywhere outside the club.

Completely agree but until counties learn from club members that clubs committies are not for filling their commitments under the CONGU rules nothing can happen.

Many thanks to everyone for your responses

Just finally...... would be interested to know what info you are required to provide when you register at your Club to do a Supp.

ALSO.... any 'pit-falls' that have occurred.

Thanks
