We have preferred lies in place at present.

From reading the above am I allowed to replace my ball by dropping and then placing within the required distance after marking.

This would speed up play and I would be hitting a warmer ball.

You can drive with one ball, then use a different ball for the next shot, by replacing it when you take your preferred lie (obviously, if you miss the fairway and are not entitles to relief, you can't).

I might have fun with it in a few weeks, when we have a greensomes competition. Preferred lies will still be in play, so assuming the next shot is from the fairway I Or my partner, whosever shot it is), will change the ball to the one we want to play. See if the guys we play with complain.

Why are you dropping a ball for preferred lies?

By the way the requirement to mark before lifting when the ball is being moved to a new location went out with the 2019 rule changes.

That looks like you have misread.
Sorry RF and Jim.
Are you saying if I lift my ball to clean the mud off before placing I do NOT need to mark the position? If that is the case how will I know it is within 6inch from the spot. Sure you are both correct though.

Guy at mine white ball off the tee.
Yellow ball into the green
Then PINK ball for putting.
He likes the lower compression ball to putt apparently.
He took a fiver off a pp who challenged him on the rule.

Can you pick and place on the green..?
Isn't it mark, pick, clean and replace - meaning the same ball..?

Yes it is ! but the greens had been hollow tined and relief was avaliable from said holes.
According to him that meant he was placing in another position and was able to change ball.
I was a bit sceptical but nobody could prove him wrong!
Great debate in the bar though.
50/50 on the rule but most said they didn’t care he can do what he likes in winter.

There is no requirement to mark the ball to take preferred lies, but it is a good practice to do so, particularly when the preferred lies is only 6 inches.

This is the model Local Rule (E-3). Note there is no mention of having to mark the ball.
E-3 Preferred Lies
“When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less [or identify a specific area such as ‘on the fairway of the 6th hole’], the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area:

Contrast this with E-2
E-2 Cleaning Ball
“When a player’s ball lies in [identify area, such as the general area, at the 6th hole, in the general area cut to fairway height or less, etc.], the ball may be lifted cleaned and replaced without penalty. The player must mark the spot before lifting the ball (see Rule 14.1) and the ball must be replaced on its original spot (see Rule 14.2).

?
If you mean can you take a preferred lie on the putting green, the answer is no because preferred lies are limited to ground cut to fairway height in the general area. The putting green you are playing to isn't part of the general area.

Side question pls
Is a green not on the hole you're playing, part of the general area?

Can you word your local rule so that you can move your ball on the green?
