Hi guys, can anyone please advise

In today's society game at Oakleaf, Newton Aycliffe (near Darlington), we had a tie for 3rd place on 33pts (15 players in the wind!!). Also both players had the same totals on the back 9.

Who wins? Is it who scored more points on the 18th, then the 17th etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

should they play for 3 rd place on the 18th ? so they play that hole and who gets the better score get the 3rd

Its normally done on countback. Usually done on best back nine and then the last six holes. From there it varies. I've seen it done on the the last 5, 4, 3 etc but I think the norm is last six, last three and then the last two and if still all square the last hole.

Very rare I'd think for anybody to be tied exactly but my suggestion if it is still tied at that point is take the two contestants out into the car park for a slug fest to decide the outcome.

I too hate countback, Ive lost a placing in the top 3 twice because of it and I have lost 2nd place 3 times and a 1st once all because of the dreaded countback, yet never had the pleasure of benefit from countback .

Who decided this method was the fairest way to judge positions :D

I would rather be given the placing and equal share of the loot rather than demoted to a lesser prize or not even that for my efforts, on the basis of who did better on the back nine .

Any contest can have a fair solution either by playing extra holes, or accepting a putting contest or even nearest the pin challenge on a hole, anything but countback! :(

Mind you I doubt those who benefit from countback would agree :D :D

I won our society day last month on countback tied with another 2 lads on 31pts, i scored 18pts on the back 9 aswell.

Aha, but to me you didnt WIN it, you were given it on the basis of a rule created by people who couldnt be bothered to think of a fairer solution. ;)

Of the other two , who had the pleasure of comming THIRD  having scored the same as you?

Dont get me wrong, Im not knocking your achievement, Im knocking the countback issue. ;)

Although the odds of this happening are huge against, what exactly would be the outcome if all three of you had identical score cards over the 18 holes?

I would like to see this happen, then maybe a sensible president could be set. :p

No system to separate tied scores will receive universal approval--look at the rugby on sunday----IMO most societies use back 9, then back 6, back 3, back 2 and finally the last hole--if tied at that stage split the prize.

Hey, we all know the rules before we start. :D

Actually, I think countback is fair enough. It favours the golfer who's finishing stronger. Was the victim of it at the GM Outing at the Glen, though, to my good pal, Scott. We both had 41 points there but he took the spoils with a better back 9. I'm not bitter. I'm over it now. Hold on...I'm away to cry again. Can't seem to stop myself.
