Stableford - Is It Real Golf ?

well off 28 I have to say stableford is my best chance of winning in a comp although my only decent result was a runner up and that came in a medal.

I don't agree with that because you are capable of hitting a 7 under your handicap which on a par 70 would be a nett 63, for the lower fellas to get anywhere near that they would have to go round a couple under gross.

I think the biggest difference between us high handicappers and the low handicappers is the low fellas are more likely to hit a couple under their hcap more consistently.

From my experience as a high hcapper playing stableford, i was in a comfort zone where Im counting my 2 shot holes thinking " I don't have to par this I've got 2 shots double bogey will do".

I always play for a medal score and will putt out even if I can't score on a hole stableford.

As a lot of people have said medal is the real test, stableford is better for the high handicappers as we can often have a nightmare hole

Both formats are stroke play.

Medal or stableford makes no difference to me. I rarely rack up a phone book, so generally I score on every hole any way. That said, I don't win much, so I guess off my middling handicap neither format suits me.

I used to win stuff when I played off nineteen.

May be I could sneak back up there over the next few years.

I think it would be interesting ig GM organised a medal event or one of the GM Meets was medal purely to see if it favoured the lower handicapper especially if a lot of people are playing the same course for the first time

Sounds like a great idea on paper Homer,but the fact that its Medal and not Stableford may put some people off.

Have to agree, medal play for me when playing comps, but stableford for meets and works outings, no fun for someone if they rack up a number early doors :fore:

Never understood the love for stableford format even as a high handicapper.

Also never heard of a BLOB until i came on here, kept wondering what the hell everyone was talking about

Then when i heard that some people pick up after a blob:rofl:, thats just silly!

Here's me thinking golf was about counting how many shots you take to get it into the hole


Fine for the occasional works outing, other than that no thanks.

I think Stableford can make you sloppy by making you think that not scoring at a hole is ok.

Its all golf to me. I try my best to shoot the lowest score I can every round. Good or bad round so be it. Must add I really like match play. Love the strategy and planing you need to win.

I don't really mind either format as I tend not to pick up too often (most of my "blobs" end with a tap in). What always makes me smile about Stableford is the way some folks will announce proudly that they got 34 points with 3 blobs as if somehow that is a sign that they played well and those blobs were nothing do with their golf.

One way it does affect my game is that I will putt more aggressively if it's for a point. Bit like putting for a half. No point (ha ha!) leaving it short.

I've never played a Stableford, they just don't seem to happen at my club or any club I've been to.

Are they more prevelent down south or is it just my club that don't offer them?

In Continental Europe 90% of the competitions are stableford. It is the better format for high handicappers. So they can pick-up the ball and the game is faster. However, for everyone with a single handicap I think it is not the right format.

We play about 50:50 Medal:Stableford in club comps

Our Friday games are almost always Stableford

When it's played in a club competition, I'd like to see one thing changed.

Instead of getting 'NIL' points for a blob, I would like to see a point get deducted.

Although it may prove too difficult for some golfers to add up, it's interesting how many games of Stableford are played and how many players still don't know how to add up their scores.
