SPOTY - That time of year again!

Because she has been excellent, and presumably the stand out player in English women's football for that reason.

I'm sure her comments about not selling her goalie top had nothing to do with it. That being said, it only became a big story pre tournament because she was already such a big player for England. And it probably became a bigger story afterwards because of her very good performances.
…and goalies often get ignored when plaudits are getting handed out - besides - she’s got personality - as most goalies do.

On SPOTY itself, I don’t watch as much as I used to, but still sometimes do. Besides, given the size of the audience it attracts in the venue itself it’s clearly popular for a lot of us.

Stopped watching this drivel years ago and stopped watching the channel itself 2 years ago.
We could be here a long time if we all posted about which channel we stopped watching years ago.

Although I’m always amazed by those who continually criticise the BBC’s current output despite claiming to never watch it.

If he’s still paying for it he’s entitled to his opinion.
If he dosnt don’t criticise

Whilst Mary's outfit wasn't something I'd try to carry off - she certainly could. Maybe, just maybe she was trying to show that you can be feminine, glamorous and cool but still play football. I know this group are trying to break down boundaries for girls to compete in sport so that could have been part of the message. I'm sure lots of young girls saw her and thought "wow she's gorgeous". I did think "she's a very attractive girl".

So if we're going to reduce it to a critique of outfits - Christopher Dean looked like a 6' oompah loompah and got rather hands on with Mary too - as well as trying to upstage Jayne (as usual)!!

As for the show. Nostalgic and the segment when we remember those lost this year always chokes me. There are always those I'd forgotten had passed. Last night it was Gianluca Vialli and it's shocking all over again to hear of his passing so young :-(

Nice tribute to Charlton and a nice shorter one for Venebles. Plus deserved Lifetime Achievement award for King Kenny…a proud Scot and a Scot of whom Scots are proud of.

And congrats to Mary Earps - a worthy winner with personality (see for example of that her outfit). And maybe Mary will return to favourite girls name.

I wonder if Jude Bellingham will dominate the award from next year, for the next 10 to 15 years?
Nope. Out of sight.........unless England win the Euro's or World Cup.

If you look at the past history of the event, footballers rarely win. Are fans too partisan and so wont vote for someone from a team they don't like? Do football fans simply not care and so don't vote (I'm in that category). Whatever it is, he will do well to win it once in his career. (I suspect he will not lose sleep over this)

Are football fans too partisan? That could be a very good point. However, that could help Bellingham. He isn't at Liverpool, Man Utd, City, Arsenal, Spurs or Chelsea. He is at Real Madrid, and I doubt there are too many fanatical Barcelona fans in the UK.

If Bellingham truly becomes (continues) to be a great player for Real Madrid, and he is up there when the votes are made for Balon D'Or (being at Madrid does his chances no harm in that either), then even if he doesn't win anything for England he could still be nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. If Messi had been English, even if he won nothing for England (like he hadn't won anything for Argentina for ages), I bet he'd have won the BBC award multiple times. I know it is a big ask putting anyone up there alongside Messi, but his era has now gone, and we could have a new era where we could have Mbappe / Bellingham being the new Ronaldo / Messi.

Playing for Real Madrid will help him there though. Because he doesn't play for anyone's direct rival, many will see him purely as an England player. I feel partly that was when Beckham started to win a lot of people over - not playing for Man Utd or any other English club presented him as an England player through-and-through that everyone could get behind.

Beckham was still at Man Utd when he won SPOTY in 2001.

The criteria to be SPOTY involve doing most of your sporting achievements in the UK in theory but not sure how much they really adhere to this. In theory if he rips it up for Real continually, he shouldn’t be in the conversation unless he’s also doing it for England and contributing to their success.
