Very tedious link to golf.

I was driving to the G/C on Saturday, and may have been caught by a mobile speed van. I can not find any info. online, and with this being the only forum I am a member of I figured I would seek help here!

How do they actually work?

As I passed the van there was a many leaning in the back window, and the operator was clearly talking to him. I.E. not using the camera. Are they operator assisted or automatic? Does the driver need to track my car as I move or does he turn the camera on and let it do its thing?

It's in N.Ireland, so not sure how this varies throughout the UK.

They are automatic once set up - camera does all the work.

If you don't receive a letter within the next couple of weeks then I would think you will be OK.

BIM will give you a definitive answer. But I think you should receive the NIP within 14 days. It will take longer if it's a company car because the lease company owns it.

Then it will be more expensive too as the lease company will charge an admin fee and you will probably be over the 'pay it with X days for discount' too!

I didn't experience that with Audi leasing. No extra admin, nor a penalty for being over a time limit. I took the speed awareness course.

Civie van got me the other week sitting on a bridge, spotted the side window too late :mad:

Nothing like being set up, thanks Hobbit!! :ears:

It's all I needed to know, but it's not what I wanted to hear. :( Thanks!

CMNI, when I was last using them, you had to point them at the vehicle in question to ensure that was whose speed you were recording. There was an audible check that you used to perform to ensure the cross hairs on the sight were correctly aligned and that therefore the vehicle you were aiming at was what you were checking. I didn't work on the vans but from memory I believe that they also photographed the vehicle, so therefore had to be aimed by the operator. A quick google search suggests that this may still be the case;

As you will see from the description of the LasTec 20/20 in the first link, it has to be aimed at the vehicle. Although no longer my line of work, I'm not aware of any of these types of Laser/Camera that are fully automatic because of the need to target the vehicle with the laser beam, and the need to hit the right part of it to accurately record the speed and avoid the error message.

The only part of this I can be categoric about is that you do not need to receive the NIP within 14 days; it is only up to the police to prove that in the normal course of events the NIP would have arrived at the last known address of the registered keeper within the 14 day limit, which is not quite the same thing.

From the way you describe the incident, there is cause for potential optimism. Obviously I don't know the road layout where this occurred, but also be aware that these lasers have quite a range; 743.7 metres has been achieved on a hand held device :eek:, and the ones in the van are tripod mounted.:(

The only fully automatic cameras that I am aware of are the fixed site cameras.

Hope that helps.

Philip, I believe you're wrong but I'd be more than happy for you to show me where these fully automatic cameras are.
