Best route advice please.
Based on rural living Scottish OAP, careful driver who has only driven on the M25 twice in his life many moons ago.
I can even remember it being built!
Probably traveling midweek afternoon
Thanks.

M3/M25 is your only real option. In its defence, the southern part of the M25 in my experience is quieter. Don't forget there is a toll tunnel at Dartford, cost is £2 iirc.

There will be traffic regardless on the M25 but midweek afternoon (before 5ish) should all be moving OK.

I usually go over the top from West London to my brothers out Southend way, but coming from Southampton I think your best bet is to do exactly what the rootmeister has suggested.

Rooter has said M3/M25 which is prob the best bet, but if the M3 is blocked or slow, you could always fly the the A3 down to Scum(ops Portsmouth) and then 20 mins along the M27.

Why you coming to sunny south coast/

Thanks folks.
We travel down every year to see my wife's relatives on IOW so I know the M3/M27 well.
She wants to visit friends near Southend this year. Over thirty years since I went through the Dartford tunnel. Has it still got a leek in it!!
I find the traffic nearer London a bit scary nowadays.
