Socks - what's your clubs rules

I've also seen someone have to purchase white socks at a tenner from the pro shop because they turned up with light grey ones with a logo on them (in fact they were white ones that had gone in the wrong wash) with shorts once. Where as some old geezer waltzed past us wearing woolen socks up to his knees looking like he'd come from the 1920s.

Silly rule IMHO that just perpetuates the impression that golf is played by geriatric out of date fuddy duddies. If someone gets upset by the colour of someones socks then they need to take a long hard look at themselves really.;)

I'm sure this is bait, but hey I'll go for it I'm a sucker. I agree completely.

Whilst I love the no jeans etc policies, I just think it is time that golf moved on.

I remember playing one club in Essex and my guest had to buy knee length socks with his knee length shorts from the pro. What it the point, may as well wear trousers then look like one off hitlers soldiers:confused:

White socks at our place. Dont think length is specified. Club is reasonably relaxed about it, many wear different colours and are rarely pulled on it.

What I do find odd though, is that you cant wear certain types of shoes around the clubhouse yet they are happy for people to remove said shoes and walk about barefoot leaving sweaty footprints all over the place.

Telling people what socks to wear is the absolute height of stupidity and the sort of utter nonsense that gives the game a bad name.

If there is such a rule at my place it certainly isn't enforced. It's a very friendly club, I wouldn't join anywhere that pompous to be honest.

Think ours is any length but white.

Out of interest does anyone know where the long sock thing originated from? Is/was there a purpose to it?

Couple of mates of mine had to buy some down at Princes earlier this year, so obviously bought the most lurid yellow ones in the shop and looked hideous!

Keeping out the riff-raff. That's what all of the dress codes are about. Snobbish exclusivity used to be a selling point for clubs.

I don't own any knee length socks, why would I? I suppose I could take my sons football socks and use those if necessary. Garish rugby ones would be funniest, making of mockery of the rule. I hope I'm never in that position.

A friend of mine turned up at Royal Ashdown to play in a comp with short socks, and had to buy knee length white socks to play in. He looked ridiculous. utterly ridiculous. He Made enough of a mockery of the rule, just by following it. ;-)

Do people not check with clubs what their dress code is before going ? That way it saves any embarrassment from both sides

Soft spiked golf shoes on 18 hole course is the only dress code entry for The Shire.

Denim fine anywhere, as it 'encourages' folk to call in on way home from work. Almost everyone is better attired than the owner - though his main use of facilities is the Gym!

Last club allowed 'ankle' socks for both Ladies and Men.

I had to purchase some long socks (£6 I think, so not extortionate) when I last played Royal St George (some years ago), but was actually grateful that I did as they provided protection from rough!

Of course you should check before going - that's surely common sense. It's quite clear that golf clubs all over the world will have different rules and codes for people to follow and to save yourself any misfortunes a simple check with the club will sort that out

Going to a club without check expecting it to be the same as the others isn't an error the club makes but an error the visitor makes .

It maybe only a game of golf but it's a game of golf on differing standards of courses and with that comes differing standards they require

If people don't realise that then the issue isn't with the clubs

I remember playing in Devon, wearing ankle socks for the round then being told that, and I quote, "knee length hosiery is required in the club house".

We took our money and spent it in a nearby pub.

Good to see golf is making itself accessible in tough times

Let's all play in jeans......and football tops. No hang on, if it's hot you can take your tops off and play topless. After all, it's 'only' a game.

Don't forget to move your ball in the rough as well if you have a bad lie

Or possibly its just about people respecting the rights of a golf club to set the standards they would like to see

As with everything - we all have a choice , if oyu would like to play at a certain golf club then abide by their rules , if you dont then you can go and play at another course. Still not heard of many people giving up the game or not playing because of a dress code.

did you see any of my arguments with GCW fans on twitter last night about this?

I'm not sure we have rules for socks. I'd wear some rather than not as it's more comfortable but other than that nope. Won't bother afterwards as I'm usually in flip flops or Tom's. Dunno why done clubs insist on people looking daft!

Do we adjust the height of the sock to the standard of the course then?

'That course is a right black sports sock 4 incher, but have you played the knee length white socker down the road, it's a doozy.....'
