I wouldnt risk using putter unless I was on my own, the slightest movement can leave you open to scrutiny . You can use anything that does not interfere with play, but I would advise everyone not to use very very thin plastic counters, my mate did and it blew away on this particular day.heh heh.

Maybe even causing people to laugh uncontrollably is classed as interference? My nephew did that to me when he put his sun glasses down one day to mark his ball :(

I too used to think that a ball marker had to be round, and would have voted against the 50p piece.
But I have a ballmarker that is shaped like a bullet, which came with some golf balls many years ago. If that's legal, a 50p must be????

I use whatever comes to hand, though I do have magnetic clip on some of my hats & try & make sure I have my four leave clover magnetic disk marker, though I used to have a few I'd stick in the top of my putter, though occasionally would go missing out of some putters as the hole in the top of some putters is different.

Coins sometimes come to hand, pitch mark reparers, tees, even the head of the putter laid on the ground.

I have lots, some, like the Augusta Masters and Crowborough (thanks GM), are unused.
Of the others, 1948 and 1949 shillings, Malaysian 1, 5, 10 and 20 sen coins (though when using a coin I prefer to have a 1 on it), a couple of course markers, plastic ones, and a few magnetic ones.
I usually carry two or three, plus one on my cap.

Does that mean I can use a dead wildebeast? :p

If you want to. All you need know is which bit of the wildebeest marks the spot (following is from the "Decisions" book.

Q. The Note to Rule 20-1 provides that “the position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the ball.” Is a player penalized if he uses an object that is not similar to a ball-marker or small coin to mark the position of his ball?

A. No. The provision in the Note to Rule 20-1 is a recommendation of best practice, but there is no penalty for failing to act in accordance with the Note.

Examples of methods of marking the position of a ball that are not recommended, but are permissible, are as follows:

• placing the toe of a club at the side of, or behind, the ball;
• using a tee
• using a loose impediment;
• scratching a line, provided the putting green is not tested (Rule 16-1d) and a line for putting is not indicated (Rule 8-2b). As this practice may cause damage to the putting green, it is discouraged.

However, under Rule 20-1 it is necessary to physically mark the position of the ball. Reference to an existing mark on the ground does not constitute marking the position of a ball. For example, it is not permissible to mark the position with reference to a blemish on the putting green.

When moving a ball or ball-marker to the side to prevent it from interfering with another player’s stance or stroke, the player may measure from the side of the ball or ball-marker. In order to accurately replace the ball on the spot from which it was lifted, the steps used to move the ball or ball-marker to the side should be reversed.

The real question is, do you carry or pull with a wildebeest in one of the bag pockets?

there is no need to carry the wildebeest so long as one has a .300 iron for just those occasions that a ball marker is required (and a wildebeest passes by).

eco note: do make sure you dispose of the redundant marker in an approved place.

I've started to buy ball markers from the courses I play, I managed to lose my magnetic mizuno one that clips to my hat, so I have a Marriot Sprowston Manor one in my "little bits" tin. Failing that any coinage...

Stupidly forgot to buy one at the GM Hanbury Manor day..

I like the poker chips, but they just look to bulky, at least coins a ball can just roll over.

Using one from my local club, I occassionally buy markers from clubs I visit but I always use the same one. My wife also bought me one of my favourite football team but I don't want to get ribbed over who I support as well as my bad rounds!
