So what do you use to mark..

New to this forum, so hi to everyone on here.

I use a poker chip which was an Odyssey freebie, it's big so there is no chance of losing it.

i have several coins in my golfbag and just pick one randomly

two different US quarters (Nevada, Pennsilvania)
50p coin
2p coin
50 Eurocent
old 50 Irish pence (a bit heavy)

Hi mate, I hope you don't use the 50p coin in medal play as thats illegal!!!!

I use a 5p coin. Small and simple, I can see it better than a copper coin, and cheap if you lose it!!! (spoken like a scots man!)

I use either my magnetic TM marker if I am wearing my cap or the Dunlop marker from my pitch repairer on cold wintr's morning when wearing my woolie hat.But will, if playing on my own sometimes use a tee.

Found this in the rule book - Rule 20-1

Note: The position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a
ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the
ball. If the ball-marker interferes with the play, stance or stroke of another
player, it should be placed one or more clubhead-lengths to one side.

I know it says "small coin" but doesn't say you can't use a 50p. As long as it doesn't intefere with play and you can accurately mark it seems you can use anything.

Interesting one this!!

The note is copied straight from the book and it just states "ball marker, small coin or similar".

Could you use an old thrupenny bit?

Don't see why not - its a coin.

Note word 'should' which is a suggestion and not an instruction - I believe you can use anything to mark your ball but a coin type disc is the norm as it is the least intrusive....

I think its something that wouldnt stop another players ball if it cross you mark, hence why a beer can would.

I use the FJ off the back of my glove. I putt with my glove on so it's perfect, always handy.

A guy at work i play with regularly uses a tee, I don't understand it myself surely a coin would be better, or so i thought.
We played a round recently and his ball was on my line (I was 20 foot back), so being his usual awkward self marks his ball with a tee!
After telling him to lose the tee and use a coin I took my putt, my ball hits his marker and lips out, he'd used a pound coin!!

So how about marking your ball position with the toe of your club as you check that there is no muck on the ball prior to putting?

I guess as long as you don't touch the ball and you can replace it in the same place then its ok. A bit dangerous though don't you think?
