Splutter splutter....Under 30k!!!!! I'm looking at 8k and think that's a lot!
You think that's bad? We just moved into a bigger house that is taking WAY more money than we thought to get it fixed. We were just sitting down figuring out how much we still need to spend (and we are not doing anything fancy) and it was about another £65k....including this new car minus trade-in etc. Basically....we are practically burning money the last few months. We probably should have just stayed in our old house which was in good shape.....fools.

Driving myself nuts now....joining my wife in the insane asylum. She's driving herself nuts worrying about new house stuff....I'm going nuts worrying about making car decisions. Still leaning towards the Yaris Cross, although wouldn't mind looking at the Citroen C3/aircross.....although I just don't trust Citroen. Anybody have a C3 in some version. I think they had some engine problems related to timing belts, but have recently switched to chain belts. Really wouldn't mind looking at the Skodas, but the last time we went to Skoda in York they were terrible, the other one within driving distance is south of Leeds....either way just not convenient.

My wife has had 2 C3's over the years. Reliable, cheap to run. Everything is paper thin though, the plastics, the metal, the stalks feel cheap. They are cheaper because they cut costs, and it shows. As I say though, never had an issue with them.

Toyota reliability is up there with the best of them. They are the best in terms of hybrid models, they do small cars exceptionally well.

My sister is onto her 3rd Yaris, my daughter has a 12 yr old one as her first car. Runs well, flew the MoT a month ago. You don't have to worry if you buy one, they are a car that gives you peace of mind.

Yeah, that's kind of my thinking. Citroen seems to be moving up in dependability.....but I can't quite believe it yet. The Toyota had too many gadgets on it....but nowadays you just don't have any choice. I really want a dash like the old Mini Clubman I had years ago......speedometer, gas gauge and a couple of warning lights. That's all I need. Beeping crap all the time is really annoying. I don't need lane assist....I actually watch the road when I drive, or auto stop, or beeping when you go 1 mph over the limit.....you evidently can turn them off going through the screen, but what a pain from the EU. The only real negative about the Yaris Cross is that they have had dead battery issues if you don't drive very much.....and I don't.

What would you consider ''within driving distance''?
To me.....less than 30 min to the dealer. The Skoda place in York is about 40 min, and as mentioned earlier my trip there a couple of years ago was pretty bad....could have just been a bad day on their part I guess. The one south of Leeds is 50 min according to Google maps.

Hard to find a stripped down car now. Mine has lane departure warning, hate it. It vibrates the wheel if you cross a line without indicating. I can turn it off but you need to do it each time so I've given up. I understand it's there to stop me drifting if I fall asleep but it's too intrusive.

I turn the auto engine stop and lane departure off every time I get in the car. Need to hold the lane departure/something in front of you warning button for 5 seconds.....annoying, but it's less annoying to me than it going off every time I weave around a parked car.

I have the same distance issue with the same two dealers re my SEAT.
However the York dealer was excellent. Even though I was out of warranty they negotiated a new fuel system (including a new CAT) with SEAT for free without my even asking. I was told by SEAT it would have been well upwards of £1750.
A couple of months ago I had my worn brake discs & pads replaced by a more local non-SEAT company. A short while later I noticed a loud rumbling when on poor surfaces. That local co diagnosed shock absorbers. I went to the York dealer who quoted a lower price. After ordering the parts, when they came to fit them they found nothing wrong but said it was the brakes. They told me that non-SEAT parts had been fitted and were 'unsuitable'. They gave me a courtesy car and the next day fitted the correct brakes with a very decent discount, in effect no labour costs for anything.

But relating to the original question......
I would have recommended my SEAT Arona as a small SUV except for the fuel system problem described above. However I couldn't find anything to suggest mine wasn't anything other an isolated incident.
The Arona is a brilliant little car, comfortable, sufficiently spacious and a decent bit of oomph.

choice between Yaris Cross and Citreon no contest. I really like the Toyota - the best mpg of any ICE car on sale according to What Car - if you are mainly local driving have heard you can probably get into the 70s, and 60s should be easy, but will drop nearer 50 and longer runs. And you get a 10y warranty if you have it serviced at Toyota

If the Citroen is the same as the similar Peugeot 2008 it is a simple which under the main dash which you can leave on or off without having to do it every time

There are a lot of people online now looking for ways around the constant beeping which I think comes into effect for model year 2025 on pretty well everything. I've been told that with the Toyota you can turn it off but will have to go through the dash screen to pick it. I can understand with the EU has mandated this stuff....the amount of people I see driving and not paying any attention is getting worse all of the time.

The upcoming Renault 5 has a programmable button. You tell it which features you don't want then tap the button twice when you get in the car and it switches them all off.

Just decided to go ahead with the Toyota Yaris Cross....I could go test drive the Citroen c3, but I can't be bothered since I found something I'm happy with.

I'm afraid I'm like Swingitlikehogan.....it's just a car. I want dependability and as long as it is half way decent looking.....good enough. With leasing I was leaning towards that more powerful version, but the colours were too annoying for both of us. Otherwords....not decent looking. I'm really tired of this two tone colour scheme they think everybody wants. Just give me one nice colour.
