Saturday February 29th - What will you use the extra day for

Reminds me of an 'advert' Companies House put up, when they reduce the filing deadline for accounts by a month.

They said something like 'Have a month off' iirc, er not quite right, you mean get the work done a month earlier from now on. So 2 months in 1 month, for the first month and then everything a month sooner.

Sadly its not an extra day off.

It's my uncle's birthday. He'd be 104 were he still among us.
Sadly, he died at 57 so I haven't seen him for a while.

I'll probably do what I do everyday...look for an excuse to cheat on my diet.
That's probably what he did, come to think of it.
That and smoke two packs of cigarettes every day, and until 25 years ago, I did that as well.

Well maybe the thing to do on the 29th Feb is to absolutely NOT cheat on your diet - and then see if you can repeat the next day.

Isn't the extra day the Thursday.....now named 31st December?
Theres only 7 days in the week......so all we have done is renamed every date after 28th Feb...so the extra date is technically thursday 31st Dec:)

Surely the 3 previous years we havd been short changed by 6 hours per year. Therefore it is not an extra day, but pay back of lost hours that we are owed.

I wonder why each year isn't exactly 365 days long.
Someone messed up there.
I think its because each year the earth takes a quater of a day longer than 365 days to rotate around the sun, this builds up to an extra day over four years so we add the extra day to equalise it. I think ?

I think you're right but my question was why?
The earth takes 365 and a quarter days to rotate around the Sun, the reason is because that's the speed the earth is travelling at due to the gravitational pull on the earth by the sun. To slow the speed the earth would need to be a tiny bit heavier.
