Ryder Cup 2025 - All matters

I can’t get Justin Rose out of my head as being a natural RC captain, and did think that would be in 2 years. However, he’s playing too well, and although that doesn’t mean he’ll still be playing well in 2 years time, I just can’t see him making a decision to effectively retire now.

So with that said, I think F Molinari home and away, then Rose home and away. That takes us to 2035, by which time we should have a few more options of ‘older current players’ to choose from, eg Rory, Lowry etc.

I just can’t see the Liv lot being welcomed back into the fold as captains, too many bridges burned. As much as the likes of poulter and gmac would’ve bee great captains.

Staggeringly Billy has never played in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup

Never qualified and never been picked
Billy Horschel played in the 2022 President's Cup and recorded 1 win, and 2 losses. Outstanding human being though! I think the US might get a coach in from outside golf. Perhaps that's what they need. I think David Duval has the right stature in the game to be captain, he was vice captain in 2018 but has fallen off the radar. Nobody brought his name up in the post match analysis. Brandt Snedeker was mentioned.

From the little I have seen of Billy Horshel, he strikes me as the sort of guy that could be very emotional AND very inspiring to the US players. He definitely seems to have certain ingredients that would make him a contender.

I think the next RC captains are very clear:

For Europe, it will be one of the Molinaris (I'm guessing F). There's a clear succession plan and they have been groomed as VC's for the last 2 events.

For US, based on Keegan's interviews it will be Tom Brady.

I think it will be a Molinari but it will be Ed - but both will be involved imo

I'd be surprised if Edoardo got it. Don't they normally go for guys with a good Ryder Cup history as a player? He played in one and earned two halves. Whereas Francesco played in three and earned a record return of 5 points in his last one. I realise Ed has been working with the team in statistical analysis, but he can surely just continue to do that indefinitely without being the captain? I would imagine Frankie is the favourite anyway.

They’ll obviously offer Donald another shot but I can see him stepping back with a home and away win under his belt. Although good chance of another win in Ireland maybe he’ll give it another crack

Good luck pulling those splinters out of your ar*e!

I think we've proven that giving them one home and one away RC each is a good plan, so if he stays on he'll have to do two more really. I think he'll step down.

Think the only hole were he made a mistake was 17th - going wide and then 3 putts for a bogey to lose the hole

BDC does not in general and definitely not in this Ryder Cup, get the credit he deserves for his golfing ability and his bottle

Agree fully with the above points about alcohol, the stupidity of crowds and lowest common denominator behaviour

Step down. Otherwise it starts to become ‘all about Luke’ - and I’m sure that he wouldn’t want that. He’s done what he took on the captaincy to do…let another have the ‘joy’ of the challenge.

BDC is a very good golfer but he is different and prob very much a marmite character - there aren’t many that have been seen in the game

He can hit a big ball and has a great touch

But at times his putting lets him down as we saw at the weekend

His mentality is the same as Woods though and he is very much single minded

It wouldn’t surprise at some point after his LIV contract goes that he takes a break from playing tour golf

Proved?

Or did it simply work out because Luke Donald did an excellent job in the home tie? Would you also give a Ryder Cup captain the second chance away if they got hammered in the home tie?

I think it is all down to the individual. For Luke Donald, it was a great plan to give him 2 chances. He was a fantastic captain, hugely respected, attention to detail and he had the stamina to stick it out for another 2 years. Goodness knows the effort that goes behind the scenes in the 2 years before the event, let alone in the build up and the event itself.

On the other hand, another individual could have a good home tie, but feel pretty burnt out to stick with another. Or just plain bad in the first home tie.

No, if the next captain somehow contrives to lose the home leg then we bring Luke back for the next away one. 😁

To me it makes perfect sense when the away cups are obviously much harder to win, we had a great level of cohesion by keeping the same captaincy and mostly the same team. So that should remain the blueprint in my opinion, where possible.

I'm not fully disagreeing, but only thinking it obviously needs to be conditional than in the home tie, we clearly see that cohesion and team spirit.

I didn't think Luke will become Captain for the next one, as all good things will come to an end eventually. Better to go out on a high, rather than overstaying your welcome. However, I think what also worked well is that he essentially had the same players for both Ryder Cups (and funnily enough, the only difference being swapping twin brothers). Question is, how many of those players could be in the side in 2 years? If they feel the majority of them will still make the team in 2 years, perhaps keeping Donald on becomes more appealing, and maybe it is more tempting for Luke?
