Ryder Cup 2025 - All matters

They absolutely gave him the job out of pity since he was overlooked two years for the team, and they obviously realised that had been a mistake. I'm not sure why he accepted it really, surely he could have said "I still have ambitions of playing in the team, so this is too soon for me to be captain"?

The mistakes he made are really just the same mistakes US captains of the past have made. A lot has been made of the Europeans using 'data' to pick their pairs - whatever 'data' means in this context - and USA don't. Sort of like that scene in moneyball, where Europe are Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill and USA are the old-school baseball scouts who don't trust it. 😄

Has anyone even been a captain but then gone back to being a player in a future RC? I'm guessing no, but it could happen for him. That would be interesting.
Didn't Europe also extensively look at the data when making decisions for their team?

Can the issue more generally be explained by more cultural issues? Do Americans, in social golf, generally grow up playing a lot of match play, particularly 4BBB? I didn't think they did. Is is ingrained into them what it feels like to play golf with a partner. 4BBB is a very common game for us. Anytime we are in a 4 ball, we seem to always play 4BBB rather than just solely keep our own scores. So, it just becomes second nature, where we know what it feels like to play with a partner, how to support our partner, how to use their support to helps us, etc?

I may be wrong, maybe Americans play it just as much as we do. However, I feel that they excel when they have control of everything. They are on their own, and the can revel in the success when they do well. They just seem much more uncomfortable when they are part of a double act. Is it just a coincicdence that two of the greatest golfers we have seen, Woods and Scheffler, seem to have a much poorer record when they are in a team compared to their own individual success.

Agreed on this. I feel Donald will probably step down. Giving a captain a home cup and then and away cup seems to work really well, because then you have stability for the more difficult away one. Moving forward we should work on that basis, unless they make a horrible mess of their home one for some reason.

And could the outgoing captain agree to be vice, or at least on the team on the event after his last?

I think it should be one of the players who have played in the last two events personally, subject to retirement from play.

Rose has to be the first choice.

It will be interesting to see what those Europeans will do

Think we got lucky with Stenson losing out because we got Luke

There is always the talk about the likes of Garcia and Poulter - both passionate players in the RC but for some reason I think Poulter would be awful and Garcia is too toxic

Westwood - no chance

But McDowell I think would have been a prime pick for Adare

The US

DJ - not a chance
Reed - too toxic

Mickleson - not sure , think a lot of bridges burnt

But amazingly I think Watson would do well
I think Casey was another who may of been interested.

I think Molinari might get the nod to follow on from Donald.

I thought Jimenez was lined up but seems to of dropped away.

Kaymer & Colsaerts I think both will have decent shouts in the next few years.

I think the US might look at Fowler for the next one.

You think not? I fear that in the current environment in the US there is a strong feeling among a large part of the population that they can say and do exactly what they want without fear of castigation or retribution…and without regret or embarrassment…welcome to USA 2025.

And I doubt that it’ll be any better in 2027.

BTW I don’t absolve Europe fans from criticism…many are way, way over the top in their behaviour…much of which is, as suggested by others, alcohol induced and inflamed. You want to calm things down a bit next time out? Have strict control on the sale of alcohol and where you can drink it on or around the course.
I can only go off my experiences of holidays in the US and having met some Americans. I have always found them to be very polite and friendly. Too loud, volume control please :ROFLMAO:, but polite. That doesn't make my experiences scientific but it is what I can go off. In the same way you can take a microcosm of life in the UK and suggest that is the norm, we have to be careful not to do the same here.

As @Mandofred has pointed out, is the Brit getting lathered in Benidorm representative? Does fan behaviour at an Old Firm game represent Scottish sports fans?

Casey is another no longer a member and think because in the past he quit the tour he can’t be a captain ?

Can’t see Kaymer being the type and also another one not a member

Colsearts is a good one , not sure why he wasn’t a vice this time around

Ed Molinari is one I think we get it at one stage

I was thinking with the likes of Casey and Kaymer what would have happened if Liv hadn’t come along?

They would probably still be members then so would be in the conversation.

And of course we would of had Stenson in Rome rather than Luke

Well..other than noting that I pay quite close attention to what’s going on in the States…I won’t go further with my observations on the matter as they would take me to where I can’t go on this forum.

With Casey even without moving to LIV wouldn’t have got it

Stenson was always imo a strange choice so we got lucky there

Would Kaymer have been a modern day Langer ?

Europe seem to have hit on a formula where the VC's are a mix of previous captains passing on their experience and potential future captains being groomed for the role. Good succession planning, and also takes away some of the burden on the current captain.

Will Rose be ready to step back from playing, to be Captain? I think that’s a key difference between Bradley and Donald, and to me you have to be prepared to pretty much retire and focus on the RC, only playing to get to know players etc.

Molinari is a good shout.

If the US picks Rickie Fowler then they’ve learned nothing.

I think Westwood is one who would have had a good shout, the same with McDowell.

I think Casey may of been a vice captain and from there he might of had a chance.

I would hope that the captain was selected from one of the vice captains. That way, they have gained an insight into what is required and are not going in cold. Use the experience as a stepping stone to the captaincy.

I’m not sure the US have a strong candidate though?

Who would you choose if you were them?
Listening to him talk I think Billy Horschel would be an interesting one. Speaks well, is well liked in Europe following his support of a number of DP events. I think he 'gets' the team aspect, has played RC but is not likely to be in the next team. He will be playing the same events though, will see the players. I think he is someone that would be prepared to learn from the European success, and copy it.

I could be over thinking what he can do but it makes sense to me.

We got lucky again with Westwood missing out then

But Casey can’t have been because in the past he quit the European Tour ( around 2010 )

Staggeringly Billy has never played in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup

Never qualified and never been picked
