Seeing the videos does make me think how far Great Britain (and now Europe) has come forward in recent decades. Reading Tony Jacklin's and Peter Alliss's autobiographies and one questions that remain unanswered for me (I was born in 1976) is they both talk how inferior the British team were in that their golf bags and shoes and uniforms (and I daresay some of the British golf equipment) were all clearly cheaper and a step down in quality than what the American team enjoyed. Why did this happen? Was there little pride in the authorities to have their players turn out the best possible? Was it a thing where it was gentlemen versus players and so the pros were looked down upon? And why were the people not in charge not on top of this? Was it really such a poor prevailing attitude at the time or something else? Or perhaps it was a reflection of how British golf clubs used to be?
Would love to hear from anyone who experienced that era as a golfer and what their thoughts are.
Cheers.
