played in the club championship today started ok then got to the 3rd had to wait on tee and then after on tee shot and second shot all the way round eventually decided id had enough an walked in on the 11th to see the second group out today only just teeing off on the 13th got to the clubhouse no more than five mins later to see the first group out finishing there round on the 18th tee surely there must be some sort of penalty for the slow play of 5 holes behind the group in front

Surely a club championship is going to be slow, ours is next week and im expecting 4 1/2 hours when usually its about 3.
Patience is the key,a lot of players lose as there going around moaning about slow play, the winner will be someone who obviously plays well, but will also be patient.

Its a case of staying patient in these situations. Walking off puts you up point one and makes it even harder and slower for your partners that you have left on the course as being a two ball it will slow up even more.

You walking in also can have an effect on the CSS which is hardly fair on the rest of the field. My old club used to ban players the following year if they walked off or didn't complete the 36 hole qualifying.

I agree with that.

Would love to sympathise with you, but didn't understand a word of that. :(
Basicly Del as he was walking in the group that went out 1st was on 18th tee & the next group were on the 13th tee .. dont blame you for walking in or bn p,d off mate & i would mention it .thats mad

walked in on the 11th to see the second group out today only just teeing off on the 13th

What group were you in? Surely the games in front of you must have been putting some pressure on the 2nd group out and asking to play through?

IMO walking off the course aint the answer. Out of interest, how long had it taken to play the 11 holes?

How can you walk in on the biggest event of the year. Don't understand that at all. It's the same for everyone so just accept it and get on with it. Nothing to stop you and your partners having a laugh and a chat while you wait. Our championship is next week and I expect a slow round but even if its tippping down I wouldn't dream of walking in

A little disrespectful to your partners, other competitors and the club during the biggest and most important event of the year.

Ours was very slow, took one group 2 hours to do 5 holes towards the end in round one! It was painful but it was the same for everyone in the end. We only had a few NRs to my recollection and those guys did stay out on the course from what I heard.

I don't know why it should take any longer than a normal comp :D

Ours (1st rnd) was today. Fortunately, the last 3 groups today were 4 balls and I was in the first of them.
The 3 ball in front of us finished 2 holes in front and the group behind us lost about a hole and a half so we hardly saw anyone all round.

I've invented a new game called "See how many different ways you can make bogey"
GIR and 3 putt
3 thins and a great up and down
Good drive, miss the green by 40yds, hit green and 2 putt
Approach into bunker, from 1 bunker to another then great up and down with flag 5' from 2nd bunker.
The list goes on.

I've never had so many complete miss-hits in 1 round.

13 shots back in the gross, 9 back in the nett.
Don't fancy my chances tomorrow :(

3.5 hrs as a two ball in the middle of three balls behind the dish washers who were having their championship as well.

3.5 hrs in the sun, loads of time to read the putts, loads of time to plan the shots, good company and no-one giving me grief.

What's to moan about or walk away from?

If it was 5 hrs I wouldn't have cared today, nice to be out on the course in the sun, it was a shorts day :)

Cheers

Steve...

Two extracts from the CONGU handbook:
It is expected that every player who enters an 18 hole qualifying competition intends to complete the round.
Sympathetic consideration should be given to players who have had to discontinue play for any cause considered to be reasonable by the organising committee.
Slow play is a continuing problem and committees need to be seen to be ready to act. I would have thought that, on probably the most important competition of the year, the committee would have some plan to check on major hold-ups in play and deal with the offenders. That does not, however, justify walking off. Our club has advised members that walking off without an acceptable reason will lead to disciplinary action – warning, suspension etc. “Having a bad round” and “play is too slow” are not acceptable reasons.

Club champs is a big day which in your case was ruined by one group.
In hindsight, it's easy to say you should have kept going and tried to enjoy it

but

There is no excuse for a 5 hole gap between 1st and 2nd groups.

By my guesstimate if the first group takes 3 1/2 hours, the 2nd group would be closer to 5

I would have complained very loudly to the comp organisers for not having someone on the course checking for slow play.
The 2nd group should have been either told to catch up at an earlier stage of the round or told to stand aside and let others through.
The slow group probably caused anger and frustration in many of the golfers behind and shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

Every golf course has some sort of policy or signs up about slow play and to let this happen on the club's biggest day of the year is in my opinion avoidaable and unnecessary.
Rant over

Wot He Said !!

But walking off as a protest isnt going to change anything or help

Its just a sign that you are unable to cope if the round isnt going as you want it too.

Put the toys back in the pram, and learn to chill out man

But that sort of gap is just stupid stupid stupid

Fragger

Oh really ? I'd tell them where to shove their membership then. It's a golf club ffs , its not work or serious in any way. To threaten disciplinary measures because someone has had enough for one day and wants to go home is rather draconian and another instance of golf club committees being right up themselves.

Of course we'd all love to go round in a medal in 3.5 hours and there are a lot of forum members who bleat on about it. I can guarantee that an awful lot of you on here are slow players who have held the course up many times. 5 hour rounds at Blackmoor this year anyone ??? 4.5 at Beau ?? Hypocrits :D

Would like to think I wouldnt have walked off but cant guarantee it lol, I go to pieces when it gets slow.

Many many years ago at a previous club the course always backed up on the 4th at clubs champs, a tough par 3. One year to combat the wait once I got to the tee I put my towel out on a bit of shaded ground, got my newspaper out of my bag and sat and read it until it was ours to go, not ideal but Id have lost the plot completely if id watched everyone else lol

We had ours a few weeks ago, 5hrs 10mins on the Saturday. There were three 3 balls waiting on 8th tee when we got to it. Apparently one of the marquee groups had been looking for a ball.

On the Sunday it had taken 2hrs 20mins to get to the 9th tee, we were behind a chronically slow group, it was only because one of them was unsure of a ruling that they waved us through. They had lost 3 holes on the group in front. Once through, we never saw them again.

Why doesnt the courtesy of waving through exist in comps?

wthe reason i walked in as i asked for an early time as i also play football on saturdays and we had a pre season friendly which we met at 12:30 and if it hadnt been for that group i would have easily finished the round
