Random Irritations

In some countries they require photo identification to accept credit cards. Having a photo driving licence is useful so you don’t have to carry your passport with you all the time.

Last time I hired a car in Cape Verde, they didn’t even want to see my licence, 😳 they were happy to see a photo on my phone 🤔

Comparing a 2nd world countries loose rules on insurance is hugely different to most mainstream countries across the world 🤣

In Cape Verde they thought I was rich, but when you consider you can get discounts on everything out there by giving the locals a fresh bottle of water that says a lot 🤣

I love the place though.

Am sure the car I hired was in the hotel you stayed in, the RIU Toureg . As you went out of the doors of the foyer, the car hire was to the left hand side. They were supposed to be reputable 🫣
The highlight of the day was getting to the Morro Negra lighthouse and the Senegalese lighthouse keeper blagged a lift with us to the nearest town when we left. He gave us directions toons in French “ Soz me duck, no parlaz French “. 😖

There’s no hire car place there anymore bud reckon they saw you coming and had a pop up shop to fleece you 🤣

Double barrelled is the way over here in Spain. Mum’s & dad’s surname. There is the occasional triple barrelled but they’re very rare.
Yes. For instance, their official names

Severiano Ballesteros Sota
Jose Maria Olazabal Manterola

Mother's surname at the end and that goes on the birth certificate. This is the convention in many South American countries as well.

My wife and I did not change our names in any way when we got married. This does confuse some people for some reason. Even those who have known us for more than 25 years before we got married. When we told the registrar of our intention, we asked what we had to do to keep our names unchanged - "Nothing" was the response.

Not sure whether to post this here or in the Gladdens the heart thread. Last night on a dog walk, on a bit of a quiet stretch I heard some raised voices. Turned a corner and some guy had his car parked in the road blocking another car and was braying on the window of a young lad’s (about 17-18 years old) car, screaming at him to get out. I walked over and calmly enquired what was going on and asked the young lad if he was ok.

This angered the bloke, who got all aggressive with me. From what he was screaming, it sounded like he was peeved the lad had been going 20mph down the quiet stretch. The bloke then punched his window and tried to open the door. I instinctively shouted and not so politely told him to do one. At that someone else got out of the van and me and the first bloke squared up as I put myself between him and the lad in the car who was now visibly upset. No fists were thrown but the bloke and his mate now next to him were shouting very aggressively at me.

The other bloke then stepped forward and I thought here we go. At that, my dog, a lurcher so quite big but very timid/daft/docile, reacted like I’ve never seen him do before. Snarling, barking, showing teeth and straining on his lead (I’d literally just put him back on it luckily). The two blokes reacted much more to him than they were to me and after a few more obscenities got back in the van and drove off.

The young lad was shaking. When it all calmed down I noticed he had P plates on. Turned out he only passed his test 2 weeks ago. He was going slow in the road as it has a school and he thought he had to do 20 going past it (which you do but only in school hours). Me and the dog got in and he drove us to his house and we walked home. Later on his Dad came round to thank me. The lad had a dash cam and they were reporting to the police as he was really shook about it.

Some people must get off on inflicting fear and anger on others. I have always hated bullies. But… what a pooch ❤️🐶! Steak for him tonight for his tea.

Love a lurcher.
Good on you for getting involved. Nice to make sure these idiots know that they’re actually outnumbered by decent folk who won’t just walk on by, if it comes to it.

Well done you and pleased it turned out well as it could easily of gone the other way.
My daughter has just passed her test and one of the things she is worried about is road rage.
I have told her to drive home if it happens and let the other car follow her.
I’ll then send her mother out 🤣.
If you can send me your address I’ll tell her to drive round yours (with a pocket full of dog treats).
Not all heroes wear capes 👏👏👏

Many reasons I hate people and bullies is the biggest one. I’m glad the situation turned out well and the young lad is doing ok.

I remember when my daughter passed her test at 18. My dad gave her a present to keep in her car, the extension off of one of his snooker cues. He told her if someone stops you and tries to attack you hit them with it, when they come round hit them again 🤣. She pointed out the issue with that and the police, my dad told her tell them grandad said to do it as you’re more important than a bully. She still has in to this day in the boot of the new car she just bought 🤣.

That is one of the great dilemmas in situations like this. A lot of actions actually escalate the situation and make it worse, when people who intervene should really be trying to de-escalate it. That said, some idiots just can't be reasoned with.

If you knew my daughter she’d genuinely never hurt a fly. She’s the complete opposite of me she hasn’t got a bad bone in her body she’s a complete unicorn I’ve no idea how I raised such a kind person. She keeps it is out memory of grandad and the hilarity of it all. I would hope if it ever happened to her she remained in the car drove off and called the police with the dash cam footage. Or that someone like Fromtherough is able to assist her.

However if dad was in the car with her 👀
