Resort fees - an American scam that I sincerely hope does not migrate across the pond to the UK and Europe.

It is an additional, mandatory fee added on to your bill supposedly to pay for extras services they provide. At a golf resort we stayed at in Arizona a few years ago they said it covered wi-fI and tips for transportation staff (the rooms were villas around the course and there were shuttle golf carts to get you around) and also tips for the golf course starters (I never knew this was even a thing).
Now it seems to be just an extra charge on top of the few dollar tourism tax etc. However they have seemingly got out of hand as we just paid $59 per night resort fee at a downtown, albeit flash, Palm Springs hotel.

Here is the price which sounds reasonable but when you add in the extras it becomes expensive and not value for money
Not sure if it’s the same thing but there’s a tourist tax, 5%, due to come in July ‘26 in Edinburgh. Sounds a bit harsh when 5% of a top end hotel is a lot more than 5% of a budget hotel.

Sadly this is in addition to the tourist tax.
Lots of countries have some form of hotel or tourism tax, I don’t think it’s a bad thing for us to reciprocate.

Resort fees are a way to have a low price for search engines and price comparison tables but a higher one in reality.
There are also tax advantages (they don’t attract room taxes in the same way as the actual room price) to operating this way in many US states that have various local hotel room taxes.
The good news is they ain’t coming here. A actual good sensible UK law! Legal/regulatory requirement that the price advertised must be the price you pay. If anywhere in the UK tries to add one you can tell them to get lost.
Amusingly Trump Turnberry had a go at introducing a resort fee in 2018 and that got squashed pretty quickly when the national press got wind of the fact they were breaking the law and ran with the story.

My wife!!! I’m off work for a couple of days thought I’d have a lay in. But Mrs M had other ideas 530am, main light in the bedroom goes on, her Shark hair dryer goes on which sounds like a C17 taking off, then proceeds to bang about doing her make up.
I get up to make a coffee and she’s asked “why are you awake”,
My response “it’s hard to sleep through all that noise”
She replies “what noise I’ve purposely been quiet not to wake you”
I wouldn’t mind but she has a dressing table in the girls room to do hair and make up that she literally uses every morning that I’m not here
