I think the standard of NHS dentistry has dropped markedly.People are far too quick to blame dentists because their dental hygiene regime is flawed.
+1Hate to tell you but the “pointy thing” isn’t pointy or sharp at all, it actually has a little round ball at the end. Probing with that doesn’t cause a healthy gum to bleed at all, nor does it hurt. If your gums bleed on probing and the sensation is sharp or stabbing then that’s a clear sign of gum inflammation, which is the precursor warning sign to gum disease (which is basically a destructive inflammatory reaction where your own body destroys the gums around your teeth as its not-very-helpful long-term response to bacteria sitting on the teeth and the toxins produced by those bacteria).
Gum inflammation is reversible but gum disease/destruction is not - any gum (and the bone underneath) lost to gum disease is gone forever. That’s exactly why your hygienist is carefully looking for areas of inflammation then trying to get you to worry about them and address them together now. This is an uphill battle for them (your reaction is a fairly typical one) because they are trying to address something before it becomes a problem, and at a stage where it can be resolved completely, while human nature is to not worry about something until there is a pretty obvious problem; but waiting to that point would mean it could not be resolved completely and there would be long-term irreversible damage.
Or the 2 stages of tooth drilling that only left a thin layer of tooth and large lump of filling, resulting in your teeth breaking as get older meaning the remains of the tooth out or if you are very lucky a crown.+1
You need to listen to Squirrel, Olly.
You're still young and fortunate that modern dentistry is here to help you out.
Those of us who are victims of 1960s/70s dentistry are now suffering the consequences of the lack of understanding of gum disease back then.
The nightmare continues. My little girl has a high temperature and says her tummy and left side are hurting.Had a phone call from them saying the test results showed salmonella, so now she has to go back in for a few days to go on a drip for different drugs than they originally sent her home with. Quite annoying. Not sure why it took them so long to check that.
Flippin eck Ori, it’s not raining for you at the moment. Hope the sun starts shining soon for you.The nightmare continues. My little girl has a high temperature and says her tummy and left side are hurting. In hospital now waiting for her to be tested. Hopefully early enough that she won't go through the pain mummy did.
Update: They did some tests, and paracetamol brought her temp down. Then they insisted they needed a urine sample which was a bloody nightmare because she isn't quite potty trained yet - it took two hours of her wandering round a room with no pants on and me following her ready to catch in the cup they gave us. Finally got that, they do the final test and conclude she doesn't have salmonella or anything of that ilk, but a 'respiritory virus' or something. So I drove her back home, get through the door at 10pm and she vomits all over the floor. Have to comfort her and clear that up at the same time since I'm on my own. I give her medicine and a bit of water and watch her for a while - she wasn't sick again. She's now in bed asleep and I'm sitting on the floor next to her in the dark. The nightmare continues. God, this week sucks. And I'm the only one who isn't sick yet so it can still get worse.

Sounds very positive. Sleep and rest, plus liquids. She'll be back to normal quickly, they bounce well at that age.Still in bed since I couldn't put her to sleep until 11pm! She asked for water at 6 though, drank plenty and kept that down. She normally had nursery today but I'll keep her at home a little while first to make sure she's alright.
