If they had two sets of twins, three girls and one boy that would be fine, but by saying you have twin boys or twin girls you have two of them by default.

That isn’t right. Even with the language used, that could mean that each pairing was a boy and a girl. The way it was worded doesn’t indicate which pairings were which, only that there are four twins.
