quitting smoking!

decided im gonna try and finally have a proper crack at it instead of my previous half hearted atempts and start again after a few days because its easier. Also all day today ive been wheezing as smoked far to much yesterday when out on the beer.

Anyway just wondering have any of you lads or lasses done it how did you get on Ive ordered the NHS free kit from there website to see whats in it and have a good read.
Did you use any potions or pills gum or patches??

I know my biggest problem for trying to quit will be during work where i smoke like a train and so does me work mate.

so any tips or advice is welcome, not picked a start date yet as want to read the pack first but tempted to stop after this pack i finish. Might try and go cold turkey and see how i get on...

I decided to give up in January and haven't had another since, it's harder for me on the course especially when waiting on the tee, otherwise no problems.

I would recommend visiting your doctor who will give you better advise and patches on prescription.

get yourself a jam jar or the like and every week put £20 in (about 60 fags), when you see how much your saving the incentive will help you continue, and yes the new shiney gets closer by the week
 
I got the nhs quit smoking kit... a load of pamphlets and a waste of ink tbh.

I found the tablets worked but it messed up my sleep pattern so stopped. The inhalator is also good but most important is good old willpower, which I lack hence still smoking :(
 
hmmm drs means time off work.. would somewhere like boots pharmacist have something they can help with or is it purely perscription stuff?
On the website it bigs the pack right up haha ah well least it will be something to read whilst on the throne

Agreed - you know it's harming you and, if you count up the money you could save and what you could spend it on, no brainer. We all know it isn't easy to stop but, if you want to, do it. If your mate at work still wants to smoke, let him - maybe he'll get the message too.
 
go the the chemist and pay £14 for a packet of patches that last one week, or go to the doctors and get a prescription for two weeks worth for the same money. The doctors may ask for follow up appointments to test your lung capacity etc. you will start on something like 21mg patches and each month drop to a lower dosage, if your only a casual smoker chances are the dosage will not be as high to start with
 
I went cold turkey, but this was made easier by the fact I was in hospital recovering from a heart attack. At 25. Ain't gonna lie, sometimes (very very occasionally) even now 5 years later I get the urge.

Ask your work mate for his support. He doesn't have to quit but he could go round the corner to smoke, not leave his packet lying around etc.
 
The key to giving up smoking is wanting to do it ...... No amount of advice, pills or patches will help you if you don't want to do it.

It's a hard thing to do but the benefits outweigh the hardship and the struggle to kick the habit.
I gave up 20 years ago and it was one of the best things I have done :cheers:

It's not easy, it's bloody hard but stick with it and you will succeed ......... Good luck. :whoo:
 
i want to do it not just for me but the mrs as well as shes a none smoker, and we got a deal i have to be smoke free by the time we have kids so thats a good enough motivation for me.
Will book a drs appointment then to sort one out if it works out cheaper than going straight to the chemist.
 
what surprised me after 2 weeks on the tablets, as a 40 a day man my readings were that of a non smoker!!! It just shows how quick some of the crap is gone, I know it takes months for the lungs to sort themselves out and they never 100% recover but I know for a fact, if in 10 years time at 50 and told sorry sir, you have terminal cancer due to smoking... I will be gutted and regretting every cigarette I smoked

Right, thats me, gonna give up now after typing that!

Lets have a little group, to encourage each other, similar to the weight loss thread.
 
im more driven to stop smoking than losing weight lol

Yeah i just hate hearing the C word and dont like saying it to be fair that is one of the things that also drives me.
 
I wish you every success in giving up. We lost 3 out of 4 parents through smoking. Its not always the arteries around the heart that fur up. Imagine it is the arteries that 'feed' the bowel. The detail of what the individual goes thro' isn't for print.

I'm with Chrimbo - you have to really want to do it, and not just try to do it.

Everybody finds their own way but for me it was cold turkey, with a bit of planning. Taking patches and pills only serves to remind you all the time when you are trying to get out of the habit.

So, imo, the key to success is to choose a date to stop, I month,3 months or 6 months.... then during that time cut down progressively until for the last few days you're only smoking 1 or 2 a day. Make your first day without any at the beginning of the week and look at it as the "First day of the rest of my life".

hmmm never even thought about weening my self off slowly, but i know i would just smoke for smoking sake almost like i do now. Where as if i stop straight off i know ive stopped.
 
try going to a hypnotist , my wife booked me in ,without me knowing but i went anyway ,i haven't smoked a fag since and that was 20 years ago. what ever you do don't put a tee in your mouth as a substitute fag as i did and nearly choked when i coughed. . you should have more will power than a cigarette

I stopped stone cold. From between 60 to 100 a day, to zilch. Cutting back was pointless. What's the difference. Stopped when I was 21. Not touched one for 25 years. Still want one. Every day. I know if I smoked one tomorrow, that by the end of the week I'd be back on 60 a day. It's all about will power. Simples.

I know exactly what you're saying, it's what I thought at my failed attempts before I tried a different way.

There is no doubt it's one of the hardest things to do in life, so at least this way it isn't such a wrench and withdrawal symptons wont be anywhere near as tough.

The gov't tell you it's so hard to give up to make it hard for you because they make a fortune out of the tax.

The tobacco companies tell you it's so hard to give up to make it hard for you because they make a fortune out of the profits.

The drug companies tell you it's so hard to give up to make it hard for you because they make a fortune out of sales of patches, lozenges, etc.

Everyone is telling you it's so hard to give up - and people believe this rubbish.

It's not an addiction. You have been conditioned into thinking that you have no hope of giving up. And they don't want you to.

Trust an old fart who gave up 1 cigarette 40 years ago before his 1st child was born. It's easy. Ignore all the hype. All you have to remember is that they will lie to you about how hard it is because they want your money. All you have to do is postpone just lighting up 1 cigarette.

Easy.

Good luck to all you guys quitting, it must be pretty tough as it is an addiction.

Good to see childrens attitude towards parents smoking is one of the major motivators.

As for those silly teenage girls who 'blow smoke', I just want to give them a good lecture but that would probably make them smoke more!!
