My dad is 67 yrs of age,his handicap is 11.9,2 weeks ago he won two comps in one week,he still drives 220 to 250 yrds straight virtually everytime, his putting is relentless, does anyone else have a dad this old and such a low handicap,or does anyone play with an older person who impresses them with their game at such an age.

One of my regular playing partners is 76 years old, plays off 11 and still drives over 200 yards. He shot a scratch 72 this year in one of the medals and models his fitness regime on that of Gary PLayer !
As someone not much more than half his age he puts me to shame.

or does anyone play with an older person who impresses them with their game at such an age.

Smiffy can hit a good 180yds if he really gets hold of one.
He's been known to pull a sicky half way round but that's understandable at his age......

We have a 67 year old plays off 3,and is deadly on or around the greens. This is his lowest ever handicap, and he won the Engish seniors age group 65-69 two years ago.

We have an old boy at our club who turned 90 this year, he celebrated with 90 holes of golf in 2 days. He is planning some skiing this winter in Japan....seriously!
Did play to 3 in his prime and has a good short game still, always straight but not long so can still manage close to level 5's.

There is an old guy at goswick that is 80 years old and won 5 club competitions this year including a best off 3 scores comp!!! he has multiple health problems but is still a member of 3 clubs and plays god knows how many times a week. he still manages to play off 14 handicap.

I sould also add re the carrying/trolley post that if he goes out for 9 holes at night he carrys his bag!!!

I’ve got lots of respect for the senior players as I’m getting that way myself and we all will, but I can remember when I first started playing, there was this old fellow, he played off 7 and very rarely had his pipe out his mouth and I mean while he’s swinging.

The vast majority of older golfers have been playing the game for a number of years, and despite their current handicaps you can guarantee that "most" of them have been down to single figures during their time.
Your handicap doesn't get down that low unless you have a very good short game and your putting is reasonable.
The first thing to go as you get older is your distance. So whilst the old boy might be 40 or 50 yards behind you off the tee, you can guarantee that he will make up for it around the greens.
Beware the old timer playing off 18 who used to play off 5. He will be a much harder guy to beat than a young whippersnapper playing off single figures.

my old man`s 73 ..his h`cap is now lappsed but was off 8 ..i think the hybrid club`s have made a big difference to the older players.just go`s to show u ,if u look after your self and keep reasonably fit you can play this game for years .well done to all the old timer`s gcd :D

My old man was a real driving force in getting me started and as I showed a tad of early promise and did all he could to try and find the money to pay at least the first years worth of PGA exams. He died a few years ago and I did a piece last year for the magazine telling of my first ever eighteen holes with him and in it I mused that as the years went on we never really played as much as we should have. Its when I read pieces like this of guys still playing so well that I feel sad that he decided to give the game up when he did.

I really admire some of these elder statesmen. We have one 77 year old that plays off 9 and he's a grouchy old sod if he doesn't beat his age off the yellows. These older golfers are a nightmare to play against in matches. Straight (and not always that short) there or there abouts in two normally twinned with a deadly short game and usually proficient with a putter. Most of the time they get shots too!

Totally agree Homer,i think the key is course management because they cant hit it as far as they used, to means they tend to be straighter but more importantly they hit the fairways.I play golf with my dad every 2 weeks and i travel one and a half hours both ways, watever the weather i know it wont last 4 ever so i try and make an effort.Really impressed with some of the posts and how good some players are at an older age.

Really proud of my dad and his golfing exploits. I think he only got down to a h/c of 11 but he only played once a week as he run his own business. He retired at 67 and upped his game to 4 times a week.
Didn't hit it very long but very very straight, and was brilliant with the putter. He eventually gave up when he was 86 playing off a h/c of 22 (playing 3 times a week at the time) when my mother was taken seriously ill. After her death he lost all of his confidence and packed up driving thus meaning he packed up playing.
He will be 96 in March but every time I speak to him his first question is ''how did the golf go''
