Professional Golf

Whilst I like watching him play golf, Rory continues to come across as such an odd character.
I really can't imagine wanting to be in the same team room as him. What business is it of his. Used to think he was just media naive, but maybe being the source of so much click bait is intentional - perhaps learned behaviour from the PIP years.
Next USA team must be loving it.

Yeah I can see the whole marquee thing (but for telly specifically it doesn't matter all that much if player B is on the other side of the fairway or a hole behind) but i think there has to be limits. I mean he plays a minimum of two rounds at most DPWT tournaments with 1 &/or 2 ppl he's way more than totally at ease with.
It's like us getting to pick our PP's for day 1 of club champs, it would never be the default but the Tour are affording him that benefit more often than not
Its been happening for years and it’s because of telly as opposed to trying to make some pros more comfortable - they know they will be able to concentrate the coverage and they know they will prob get more interaction

Just explain this to me like I'm 5 please... Why has this debate about Rahm & Hatton needing to pay fines ignited again? They literally just played in a Ryder Cup a few months ago.

They are currently being allowed to play on the DPT under appeal of the fines , same way as previous people did

Once the appeal has been sorted then they will more than likely have a choice - keep membership and pay the fines or resign

While Rory and Ryder cup are mentioned (& I’m sure it isn’t Rory’s doing) Another ‘matey’ group for him for first two days this week

How does he get paired up with his ryder cup bessie mates so often in DPWT events and could it ever creep into him receiving a sporting advantage
I totally agree. Playing with your best friend every tournament has to be an advantage. The same goes for Scheffler and Burns.

Is he mates with Hatton? Can never tell when he's out there saying him and Rahm should be paying fines etc this week. Will Hatton have a word and tell him to wind it in?

Hattons literally replied in a post practice interview. He was very calm and just said it’s with the lawyers I’ve got nothing to add. He added I’ve been plying my golf so not checked my phone to see Rory comments but I’ve nothing to say.

Last couple of years that have been putting people in marquee groups

They've been doing marquee groups for decades. I went to the 2000 Open and it was not a random draw. Every Open I've watched since then has been structured with feature groups bunched into the middle of the morning wave and afternoon wave. Good for TV and great for the spectators on course.

Anyway - outside the standard response of PGAT this and that and Rory etc and the whys and where’s

What do we think Rahm and Hatton will do ? Pay the fines to allow them to continue to play on the DP as some have done which allows them to play in the RC

Or resign membership as others have done ?
To have a stab at giving a view I like visibility of a load of info that we'll probably never see.
What rules were in place back in the early days?
How have the rules changed in the interim period ?
What are the rules now?
How much are they looking to fine these two?
How much has DPWT collected in fines to date?

From the snippets picked up (unconfirmed) -
It felt like the fining was haphazard in the early days, and (arguably) harsh. Suspect the arbitration process forced more formality/structure going forward.
Several reports that the fines levied on players who joined in later were less harsh than the ones on earlier ones.
Think most on here can look at the DPWT schedule and predict the tournaments the mainly pgat players will play in. Think one of Rahm's 'points' was he was being fined for events he'd never played in, and never would have had in his schedule whichever his main tour was (comes back to the rules).
Believe Reed said they can play in these early seasons events without fines as LIV season hasn't started yet. Don't know if that is new thing this year or not, and whether it applies to the end of year ones also.

I'd like to think something is thrashed were there is a degree of 'face saving' for all parties with some monies changing hands, and people move on.

If not, and it reaches the point of exclusion/resignation then it will likely be (another) divisive topic.
Many will blame the players stubbornness, etc.
Many will believe it is an event between those born in Europe verses those born in the USA, that it shouldn't be controlled by a business and blame the tour.

Possibly Rory feels Europe can win at home without those two anyway, and he might just be right 😉😄

A journalist asks Hatton a question, and he chooses 'no comment'.
A journalist asks McIlroy a question and he nearly always gives an answer. That answer then gets publicised (but without the question) and Rory gets criticism for sticking his nose in.
As a golf fan, I prefer McIlroy's route. Many people complain that golf doesn't have 'personalities' any more. You don't have to agree with McIlroy all the time but at least he is expressing his personality.

Yep 👍

Rory will always give his honest opinion when asked a question

I see Westwood has agreed with Rory

I have no issue with McIlroy saying what likes. I do take issue when others who respond then get criticised of their responses to him whilst people defend Rory. I’m very much in the camp of if it’s ok for Rory to say something then it’s ok for others to respond. Happens on here all the time People defend Rory but then Criticise the likes of Westwood et al when they respond.

I also never said I disagree with McIlroy, in fact I didn’t comment on what Rory said, just posted what Hattons response was. I actually agree with Rory in this instance. As for Hatton I find his response classy in this regard because it is still very much at a legal stage and rather than being drawn into gossip or being drawn into slating McIlroy for a reporter to get some click bait headlines he diffused the situation and left nowhere to go with it so maintains a good relationship with fans and other players.

It sometimes comes across like he’s way too easily ‘trapped’ by journos, they can seemingly push his buttons at will and control the narrative

I don’t think Rory should ever be asked anything more controversial than “Rory do you think its ok to wear black socks with shorts on the course”

Superb round from Molinari to open in Dubai, really good to see his smile on the course and playing well. Gives us little blokes someone to relate to.

Tough start for Rory and another bad one for Tommy, he look out of sorts in the first couple of events.
It's nothing to worry about, it's simply because I've been putting them in my DPWT Fantasy Team for these events. Once I stop using them they'll be back to their best.
