Fair enough, only golf nuts watch golf on tv. To describe it as dull, I question whether you appreciate how good these guys are. Golf isn't a fast moving high impact sport and it's never going to be, it would still be just as 'dull' to you if it was 30 mins faster a round

There is no evidence that playing very slowly leads to better scores.
So do you think if a professional played faster, knowing less information, taking less things into account because of time restraints they would play better. I know a guy who currently plays on the tour and also two guys who did for varying amounts of time but mo longer. These guys have to be sure they are hitting the correct club/shot shape that that particular situation demands and if they rushed I know they wouldn't perform as well. Certainly I don't think they will speed up to keep a couple of old guys in armchairs happy

Well the governing bodies seem to think there is a problem with speed of play although they haven't had the guts yet to start penalising players. I'm pretty sure that a 2 shot penalty for someone at the top of the leaderboard on a Sunday afternoon might speed things up a bit.

yeah i probably don't appreciate how good they are and that wasn't helped by the fact all three of them 'missed the cut' or whatever it's called. yeah, i know what golf isn't. cheers.

They are only playing for millions because millions watch them play. Slow play reduces the audiences hence will ultimately reduce the prize funds. They should keep this in mind.

Imagine if Nadal vs Federer were taking 5 mins to "visualise" every serve ;)

They'd be penalised - and they are - even the very top players

Ive just watched Sergio stand in the middle of the fairway for close to 5 mins... the Henrik almost did the same. I'm not convinced either hit a better shot because they waited.

Let's be honest about this, does slow play on the tour really bother you? These guys are playing for millions of dollars, some of the guys lower down the list genuinely struggle to make that great of a living so if I was in these circumstances I'd be taking my time too. Why wouldn't you after all its your job and if checking the numbers twice helps you perform better/earn more money why wouldn't you take your time. Quite simply you'd be a fool if you didn't. Quite often I'll see the old guys who tee off on the first tee time a sprint round the course and then brag about how it only takes them 3 hours or whatever to play a medal round but quire frankly I'm there to socialise, and have a good time playing the game I love why would I be in a rush?

Beware - you are kicking the hornets nest with that thought :)

Lol they think it's that much of an issue they've yet to penalise a player. Sounds like they are serious!

They penalised the young Chinese player at the Masters a couple of years ago to try to make a point but it failed miserably because he was an amateur at the back of the field. Had they had the guts to do it to Jason Allday it might have had some effect.

I don't get that standing about for ages looking in a massive book is giving more information than someone else, who has a quick look at the relevant page as he walks up to the ball.
The longer you stand there, the more the wind can change, and the more confusing it gets.

So you're obviously assuming these guys can see the lie they have before they have got to the ball, lie dictates EVERYTHING. Also you must be assuming that they aren't going to be waiting on galleries passing across fairways, or players teeing off on adjacent holes/putting. Crowds can make alot of noise/move alot, you know nothing about playing the game to a high level honestly

Yep. I am clueless. But then i watch golf, and see a whole lot of discussions, book reading, faffing about, and then see this expert practioner of the sport hit a shot a 28 handicapper would be hacked off with. I was at the grove, and left after about two hours as i was bored. I went to watch golf, but it wasnt what i saw.

If you get bored watching some of the best players around you're obviously not much of a golf fan, because the way they play, club selection, shot choice, course management, imagination they have is what you want to watch. You should stick around you might learn something

That's nice, tell us about your experience
Very low handicap golfer, candied for alot of good professionals, friends with caddies, carry out work for a couple of tour pros. Yeah I have a fair idea, the average golf handicap is 16 or whatever. This is why the average guy has no clue about playing good golf because they don't think about anything except not losing they're ball on they're next shot
