So here's my dilemma. I have now moved everything into the pencil bag for winter as I find it easier to do it in one go now than have to chop and change dependant on trolly bans etc. My pencil bag only has one divider. I'm think you may see where I'm going with this.

For the first time in my life (thanks to GM) I have new clubs, and don't really want to get them banged up all winter as I throw the pencil bag over my shoulder / into the car / down on the ground in a huff. However, I am almost certainly too young and trendy to be thinking about iron covers ...

That said, a quick look on th'ebay informs me I can get some lovely tangerine ones for less than a tenner.

Two questions for people that have iron covers:

1) are they a pain in the arse to take on and off every shot
2) do they actually stop your stuff getting banged up

Two questions for those that don't:

1) just how much (more?) of a merchant banker am I going to look
2) if I turn up with iron covers at the next GM meet-up, am I still allowed to play

I have iron covers.
Q1. Not a pain at all. Cover is slipped off the club and in my pocket pretty much before I've got the club fully out the bag.
Q2. Yep - they do protect the clubs.

And do I look like a merchant banker? No more than usual.

They would clash with your comedy trousers mate:D

Seriously don't do it, embrace the dings on your clubs. Irons are meant to look used!!

You get some iron covers and it's a slippery slope. Iron covers>Castle tees>chippers>rubber tees on a bit of string!!!

It could happen!!!!

They protect your clubs and are easy to use - no brainer really.

Ours was a short lived friendship, I enjoyed your company at West Hill, but you've gone and ruined it with this post!!!

It's not irretrievable though, have a bloody good word with yourself man!!! ;)

I have to ask why you think they are a waste of time and money ?

Very old ground chief............what does more damage?.....

1. The clubs clinking together as you walk?

Or

2. Slamming the head into the turf at 80mph removing a load of mud and grit?

:)

Exactly.

I've had head covers on my TM tour preferreds and they look excellent despite being in the bag for three years. Didn't bother with the G25's as a) they seem indestructible and b) planning to hit single figures next season and upgrade

Yes you can't protect the club as it hits the ball or ground but that doesn't mean it's a waste of time to protect them from hitting each and getting needlessly scratched or chip in your bag.

We spend hundreds of pounds on Irons so why not protect them when we have the chance ? I'm guessing you all have covers on your woods and putters.

Irons covers are well worth the money to give a little bit of protection to your irons - they arent massively time consuming and the cost is minimal.

I use iron covers when I carry to protect the clubs and stop the as your clatter. The biggest problem I have is that I keep leaving them on the fairway. I won't use them in the rain though as your hands get wet taking them on and of

Girl!!

Have a look in other (forged) player's bags. Yes the clubs will have battle scars but even several years down the road they're still more than useable.

And, honestly, how long do you expect to keep the clubs?

Nope no putter cover. yes to woods as they have a sock on them to protect the graphite shaft and the paint on the crown. But iron covers......come on....what's the point? I hit the ball then the ground (mud, stones etc) at over 90mph and you are worried about a little bag clatter?

The point is too protect them when you can with minimal effort and cost. I would have thought that would be quite clear.

Agree with the guys who say that clubs are tools and will get marked.

Iron covers are for losers.
