Practicality vs Credibility

I had iron covers when I bought my first set of brand new clubs a few years back. They are just a pain I found to get on and off, as well as losing one every other month. Before I knew it my Pitching wedge had the 4 iron cover, 7 iron had 3 iron cover, no sand wedge cover... So I just dumped them in the end.

Ultimately it comes down to this, if you use iron covers you look like a knob. They are the definition of golfing knobiness!!

They completely fail the 'cool kids at school' test. Which ultimately is all that is important:thup:

I've had head covers on my TM tour preferreds and they look excellent despite being in the bag for three years. Didn't bother with the G25's as a) they seem indestructible and b) planning to hit single figures next season and upgrade

Interesting attitude Homer (I realise this is the 2nd post of yours i've commented on today, purely coincidental, honest!)

I haven't been around long, but if you've been flirting with single figures for a while, and you find a club (G25's) that manages to help you play to single figures, why would you then change them when you get there? As I said, purely interested. My personal way of thinking is that if I had a club that helped me get low, I would try and keep that club. Or do you think that below a certain point they wouldn't be able to be "workable" enough? Single figures are a long way off for me, so I have no worries for a while!

Oh and as to the OP, I don't like headcovers, but wouldn't really judge someone either way for them!

I have to agree with those who say 'no' to the iron covers. As Cheltenham Hacker says, I wouldn't judge someone who had them but I wouldn't use them myself.

I have to echo the rest of your comment CH. Homer, you've only just gone on a custom-fitting oddysey (sorry :p ) which saw you go to more than one fitter and get the same result - the G25s. Why on earth would be setting your sights on yet another change when you've had your current clubs for less than 6 months?

Cheers for the suggestions fellas. I am tempted to steer well clear.

Here's my two reasons for thinking about buying some;

1) bag clatter gets on my wick after a while and means I can't walk around quite as stealthily
2) it hides what irons I do have so that people don't judge me too quickly based on clubs (rather than my trousers). Had quite a few comments this year about the niceness of my clubs and each time have to do the full 'actually I was really fortunate to win them ...'

Anyhows, we'll see. Might get some pink ones just to really mix it up a bit.

Plenty of low handicappers use G25 irons Homer. You need to put the ego to one side. If they do actually get you to single figures then why not stick with them?

I get that too, people think either:

A: Has loads of money
B: Must be really good

I love disappointing people as i am neither of the above!

Iron covers are a bit like exploring your sexuality as a teenager.... some try it once and the realise its not for them....;) Some try it, like it, remain in the closet for years but look forward to upgrades in their stockings at Christmas! You have to ask yourself which one are you?

I tried it once....... lost 3 in the one round and went back to clatter! :o

I must be in the closet as I've been using them for years...

it does help get better resale values when I trade them in...which I invariably I do every few years

Understand the sentiments and while the G25 are giving me for forgiveness and are easier to hit they really aren't suiting my eye at all which is why I hankered after the I20. Having hit those I'm not happy they will give me any benefit yet so planning to keep the G25's until I reach single figure nirvana and then review my options. The I25 should be out next season plus whatever other offerings appear. I'll try them on a monitor and see what the numbers say as I did this time. Rest assured the G25's are in the bag for a while, pending any outbreak of a real golfer emerging in the winter comps and getting cut significantly

and this has what exactly to do with iron covers ?

Back on track real men do not use iron covers. My forged irons make lovely music clinking together as I carry my bag (real men carry as well). The small dinks on the back of the clubs are hardly going to affect their value. It is the great big stone chips that will do that.:(

And this is what I don't understand....
A real golfer emerges like a butterfly from a chrysalis after years and years of being a slug and you then dump the clubs that got you there.
You cannot buy a game. Just because you reach 9.4 it doesn't suddenly make you a great golfer who is going to perform better with a more expensive set of clubs

Not true, well not 100% of the time. If you improve your swing you might not NEED those clubs that are currently helping you get the ball up in the air, you might do better with something that then keeps the ball BELOW the clouds.

I've read the hungry caterpillar, I'm pretty sure he didn't start off as a slug:o

I think homer is more like an ugly ducking, waiting to emerge as a graceful, s55 wielding swan:D
