Politicians swapping parties

For years my Tory candidate had been Damian Green but a year or two back there were constituency border changes and Damian Collins became the option - we didnt get a choice so I reckon it's the party that you vote for first and the candidate second.

Its always been a party, based on the manifesto, I've voted for. If the local candidate has been obnoxious, and there was one, I've abstained.

Ask the vast majority of people who they voted for at the last election and they'll say Tory/Labour/LibDem etc not the name of their candidate.

I am 'locked' into a one party constituency... In truth, which way I vote counts for little... Same party since the year dot and probably no change for any foreseeable future...

Been like that all my voting life.
High Wycombe and Aylesbury are about as safe Tory seats as you'll get.
Put up a knife-wielding, homophobic, rabid dog as a Tory and it would still win.

Exactly Brian, I've always voted Conservative other the one time I voted UKIP and I never knew the candidates name and didnt much care

To be fair out tory boy isn't an appalling person... However, his only obvious qualification, for being gifted a job for life, is that he's a son of a tory grandee...

As shown by the number of Tory candidates voted in overall? ;)

I don't think most MPs worry about where their 'based' as long as they get voted in.

It seems to me, like Rudd today, that their first priority is to whinge and disclose stuff on Twitter and get on Telly. The concept of confidentiality and secret discussions as a normal part of 'management' that our self promoting MPs ignore and replace with a desire to be seen as 'revealing' how important they are!

IMO you and I live are way down the list of their priorities compared to preparing for a media career

I've been away this weekend, come back and see another mp has jumped ship to the Libdems. What surprises me is that all moving across highlight Brexit, understandably, but nothing else. Do you change your whole set of beliefs over one issue? What about all of the other LibDem policies? Do they now believe in them?

Once Brexit is done will they all stay LibDem? I can understand going independent with perhaps the hope of returning when this is all over but for so many to swap party allegiance over one issue is surprising and I think short sighted. Their credibility surely disappears?

Surely any credibility goes out of the door when you jump ship to a party who polled 6% in the vote that got you elected....

Think you've got it spot on Neil.

One of those that crossed the House in the last few weeks was asked a very pertinent question. "I'm sure you're aware that when you won the seat the LibDem candidate only got 6% of the vote, and only just hung on to their deposit. Do you believe you will retain this seat at the next election?" Unsurprisingly, they expect the full support of all those that voted for them last time... deluded or arrogant?

Was a law created to make this have to apply to her?
No!
So why should she do it, if no one else does or has too?

Because it's called hypocrisy.

And this Is why most politicians ( not all ) are talked about in the same breath as the stuff you find on the bottom of your shoe that smells.

You vote for an MP, not a party. Suck it up.

No one votes for the person. They vote for the party and the manifesto the party presents. When the person defects, an immediate by election should be held.

Too easy to change the political landscape with these buggers jumping ship all the time.

The bit I cannot understand is the ex Tory leader candidate that has gone to the lib dems, and I use democrat very loosely. He stood as a leader elect for a party and country that needs this mess sorting out. He has now gone to a party that now has in it's manifesto " It will cancel Brexit" if it gets in power. How can he honestly be taken seriously along with others. Furthermore how can the lib dems be taken seriously.

Everyone votes for the person, even if they don’t realise it. That’s why there isn’t an immediate by-election.

People vote for a prospective MP in the anticipation that person will assist in carrying out the manifesto commitments of the party they represent due to these policies being in tune with the voters wishes. If the MP later decides they no longer want to work to implement these policies they no longer represent the wishes of those who elected them. If the MP decides another manifesto is now more in tune with their personal beliefs the only honorable thing to do is resign and to stand again in a by election. The problem here is these people wish to be addressed as Honorable but are absolutely not.

We know that but it’s not “really” the case.

You are a conservative/Labour/lib dem etc supporter.

It's 100% exactly the case.

The way most people decide on their vote may not match up with the reality, but the actual vote we cast is for the person.
