Whoever it was said that stableford was a nice way to get into comps as medal's can be tortureous was dead right!!

I played my 1st medal last night, one of the last groups out and noticed that nett 69 (par 71) was winning as I signed in, got to the first tee and creamed it down the middle and generally played the front 9 really well, 2 highlights being the par 5 7th, I pulled my drive into the trees, duffed a chip out sideways, played over the trees onto the fairway for 3 and then hit a 230yd approach with a 3w to 10ft and holed the putt for par, then the par 4 9th, pushed my tee shot to the right and left 190yd approach which I put to 6ft with my 19* rescue and 2 putted for par.....walked off the front 9, 2 under par with great thoughts!!

And then the wheels fell well & truly off and shattered into a million little pieces:
10th - double bogey
11th - double bogey
12th - double bogey
13th - bogey
14th - bogey
15th - whats the terminology for 5 over par? its a par 5 and I shot a 10 (5 off the tee)
16th - par
17th - bogey
18th - double bogey

This tortured me as even though our back 9 is much harder than the front 9, i've played it really well lately. The horrible thing is, apart from the 15th tee, I didnt really do much wrong, just had a lot of unlucky breaks and missed putts. God i hate this game sometimes!!

Finished with a nett 79 and 0.1 back, gutted :(

Trust me mate that is not bad for your first one. It will take a few for you to get used to the pressure of the format etc. Ive played about 5 or 6 and im just getting used to the pressure and mindset needed. Just think you got 79 with a car crash on the back nine so theres room for improvement especially as you know you can play the back 9 much better.

thats a respectable first go good front nine obviously a blow up on the back but other than 15 from some of your shots on the front a 5 here wouldnt be out of the question that suddenly makes the 79 74 and in buffer despite the run of doubles. it will all help for next time.

You started thinking about the score, so you tried to play defensively instead of the free flowing golf you played up to that point.

Plus, it's only 0.1 :)

I'd try reading Rotella's "Golf is not a game of perfect".

Try and identify what caused your game to change & why a good round turned into doubles & it will help ?

As SB said did you start thinking about the score ?, ok you will learn not to do that again ,
Did you change from attacking to defending what you had ? again , you will know better the next time ,

We have all been there , figure out what you changed & try not do it again , not easy but at least you know you do have the ability , good luck ..

Yeah shake it off chap it's good experience, next time you make the turn hopefully you'll just play golf.

I think checking what the leader in the clubhouse is before you go out isn't a great idea personally, maybe you like knowing but to me whether someone's in with a nett 60 or nett 72 it will affect your mindset when you should be playing your best and not worrying what the others are doing/have done. If I came second in a Medal with nett 61 I'd be delighted with the juicy cut, not annoyed someone's shot the lights out even better than I did. Perhaps it played on your mind at the turn. Last Medal I played in I didn't add up my scores at all going around, and I won ;)

As the lads have said (and is clear from your other posts) you have the ability, just keep doing what your doing and let the scores handle themselves.

You started thinking about the score, so you tried to play defensively instead of the free flowing golf you played up to that point.

Thats just it, I didnt change my game at all, I smashed one down the 10th fairway but my approach hit the left bank of the green and shot off, then there was a few duffs here and there but not once did I start playing the percentage, I was attacking and aiming for the pins as much as I was on the front 9.

Maybe the conditions didnt suit, it was unbelivably humid and I'm not the slimmest bloke in the world lol

Net 79 is not a disaster, remember pros are equivalent +2/3/4 and look at any leaderboard after 2 rounds and you will see scores in the high 70's/80's.

Im sure you will improve the more you play, stick at it!

Try not to have any expectations and just play with whatever game you've got on the day.

it's a crazy game sometimes, I feel like I've been playing well recently but I'm struggling to score well, and yet other times I chop it round like I've barely played the game before, get a bit of luck here and there and post a decent score.

By putting in 3 cards, like everyone else did?

I would have thought that a first handicap of 13/14 is relatively unusual without some previous playing/handicap history. You don't have to be a forummer on here for very long to note that most first awards are in the 20s.

Maybe I misinterpreted the OP and it was his first medal at his new club.

As to his blow by blow account of his round, I sympathise - Ramsdale's back 9 is a fearsome proposition.
