Bit harsh, JD has a couple of majors so would say he had plenty of talent.

Fair play, probably worded wrong but I meant as a character comparison in the main. Reed has many years ahead of him and will surely win a couple of majors....won't he?!?!?! We'd have to assume he'll be around shooting good scores longer than JD did anyway.

The same could have been said for Sergio Garcia.

Talent doesn't always equal success.

Yes can see the similarities myself but certainly no formality he will win a major with the depth of talent around.

I always remember being told when I was young..... it's nice to be important but more important to be nice.

I'm sure you can still reach the top in your chosen profession following that mantra.

Rory comes across as nice. To be fair, most golfers come across as very friendly, approachable chaps. There are always going to be exceptions, but in golf, they're few and far between.

I thought that was a great read. That we are even talking or investigating what someone did at the age of 17 says more about society or the author than it does about the 17 year old, provided there is not something truly wicked that we don't know.

I understand that Payne Stewart was a bit of an ass when he was younger but I think it was truly wonderful to see him grow as a human being and become such a great character.

What a great shame he has issues with his mother and father, its rough when things don't work out with ones parents. I hope his wife loves and supports the heck out of him and that he is able to feel and feed off that.

As for the cockiness, go for it, nice guys dont win. When he cupped his ear to the crowd at the rider cup it made me smile! Wile maybe not integrated into the "team" he was sill doing the biz and did not request permission to show us he was looking to win no matter.

I disagree with this! Plenty of examples, both in Golf and other sports, where they do. Being 'nice' and being ambitious/focused on winning are not mutually exclusive.

Rory seems a nice fella, interviews well even when he's played badly. Federer and Djokovic also seem decent chaps as well.

Ye, that maybe was not the best phrase but reading that article I was interested in his intense desire above all else.

I would say that to continually succeed at the highest level you need an intense desire and some players have the ability to channel it without showing it. Controlling that intense desire is just as important as possessing it.

I think given the type of person we are being told he is it will be a while before he controls it so what he has he has to use. Time will help him on the personal stuff and the temperament.

Golf has a certain arrogance to it - even at amateur level, lots of better golfers will scoff at the worse ones, they even seem to have a priority in standing when it comes to be taken 'seriously' in forum posts as their persona makes them more of an 'alpha male' due to their golfing prowess.

Reed was a 17yr old kid - nothing to see here in my opinion, how you behave when you are trying to get somewhere isn't necessarily the same way you'll be once you get there, just read about Richard Branson for a start and you'll see what I mean. I like someone who tries/wants to win... I think it's a characteristic you NEED to win at most (if not all) sports. Nicklaus wasn't like at all so I gather and Tiger wasn't exactly Mr. Popular.

Feel sorry for Reed in a way that his parents appear to have 'issues' both when he was young and present day. Maybe they should back off.

Reed's problem is that in the internet driven media world that we live in this is grist to those who like to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Such issues / non-issues would have barely registered 20 years ago.

Absolutely, I was going to ask what Hogan was like as a kid before everyone knew him as such an outstanding golfer. Maybe Hogan's parents didn't get on with him.... who knows! Perhaps he cheated once as a 17yr old in his monthly medal :p

Clearly Reed has a superb talent for rubbing people up the wrong way and obviously not on too many Christmas card lists on here but he has a great golfing talent. I still think there will be more to this

I had the briefest of chats with him on the practice day at the World Matchplay and he was very polite and friendly - he's alright by me!image.jpg

Hogan's dad committed suicide in the family home when Hogan was 9...
