Played Hadden Hill today
They have 25ft high wooden posts holding up power lines across several holes.
As usual there is the LR about replaying the shot if your ball hits the wires....but not the posts....
I know that you don't get to replay when you hit a post/pylon but why?
Mentioned it to the starter on the 10th, as I'd hit a post on the 8th, and he reiterated the rule.
I asked why and he said the posts are like a tree....I said Well the wires are like branches then....
So why don't we get relief from the things that hold up the things we get to replay the shot from when we hit them..?

The local rule may include the poles,so would suggest the commitee at Haddon Hill consider them to be part of the test of playing the course.

We have them on one hole and if poles or wires are hit it's a mandatory replay shot.

One issue is that a pole is in range from the tee and there are trees nearby. Difficult to tell if a ball hits the pole or a tree - although they do make different sounds. Not sure it passes the KVC test!

Presumably the lines cross the fairways but the poles are off to the side? Not penalised for hitting a good shot but 'penalised' for hitting a poor shot.

The one I hit was off to one side and the wires ran fairly parallel to the hole...
Just seems a little unfair that the posts are not automatically included in the LR.....after all, if they weren't there then the wires wouldn't be either..

If you’re a member at DG&CC then I recall two holes with lines and/or pylons!
14th on Lakeland and 9th on Woodland?

It gives the discretion to the club to determine whether hitting the pole was a good or bad shot. 'Off to the side' doesn't sound good

I once played with a lad who was adamant you shouldn't pick up a golf ball that had it a overhead wire as it would be fully charged with the voltage of the line . 🤣
Trouble is when you hit it with a metal club you get electrocuted as well.
Something to be said for Persimmons.
What about the steel shaft?
Stop being silly. Everyone knows that electricity has a half life and it's not very long. By the time you get to the ball the very worst you will experience is a slight tingling sensation.

And yet hitting a wire less than a foot away gives you a get out of jail free card....
That's my point..no matter where they are, thenwires wouldn't be there if the posts/pylons weren't there..
Therefore, logically, they are one and the same.

Back in the 1990s (or early 2000s, hard to remember) I was playing in a first team match at Melton Mowbray.
I hit the overhead cables on one drive so had a free replay. I hit the cables again. Wrote off two balls. Third time lucky.
Chap I played against said he heard tales about the cables being hit each year, but had never seen it done. He wondered whether anyone had done it twice as I had done.

Later in the same round I came the closest I have ever done to an albatross. Two whacks with the TM R360 to a few inches away from the hole.
A team mate got a hole-in-one.
Memorable evening.

The rule makes this fairly clear
Relief for Poles and supports are optional and should not be used where they do not interfere with normal line of play.

I thought I would make it simple where I play and included the poles in the LR also a player may actually gain an advantage by hitting the pole as it might well stop a ball from going OB.

I suppose it has already been said. But, if poles are off the normal line, then there probably is no reason to have to replay the shot if you hit them. In fact, if the player hits such a post, they were wayward with their tee shot, so would it be fair if they get to play the shot again? I wouldn't think so.

If the post was in the middle of the fairway, I guess the club could allow a replayed shot. But, even then, perhaps not necessary (as some courses have a tree in the middle of the fairway, and golfers need to avoid that). I guess the assumption would be golfers have a bit more control over the line they hit.

However, if the wires go all the way across the fairway, not many golfers have control over the trajectory they hit. So, they could hit the perfect shot in their eyes, and then see their ball hit the wires. So, I can see why that would be considered unfair, and the golfer able to replay the shot. Wish they had that rule at my 8 aside footy, as their is a wire across the half way line (which can be used to hang netting to create 2 pitches either side), and it is really annoying when a lofted pass hits it.
