Not sure why it has taken me so long to realise but I hardly ever use the mid and long irons in my bag. Going round my course at the weekend the round was:

1 Driver, Hybrid
2 Driver, 3 wood wedge
3 Hybrid
4 Driver, 3 wood
5 Driver, hybrid
6 Driver, PW
7 Hybrid
8 Driver, PW
9 Driver, hybrid
10 Driver, 3 wood
11 Driver, GW
12 PW
13 Driver, GW
14 Driver, 3 wood, 9 iron
15 Driver, hybrid
16 Driver, 3 wood, 8 iron
17 hybrid
18 Driver, hybrid

So there you go, 2 full iron shots all round and the rest are woods, hybrids and wedges. Ok, you can add some chips etc to the above description as I missed the green but you get the point. Playing as it is at the moment I could probably take the irons out of my bag and play with what is left. Hardly surprising that my iron play is not up to the standard of the other clubs in my bag.

I counted 8 clubs ... that's a nice light bag !

I reckon I used every club in the bag yesterday :)

EDIT: Sundays round .....

2- Driver, 9 iron, wedge
3- 8 iron
4- driver, 9 iron
5- driver 9 iron
6- driver, 8 iron
7- hybrid, wedge
8- driver, 6 iron, wedge
9- driver, 3 wood, PW
10- 7 iron
11- hybrid, 6 iron, wedge
12- 9 iron
13- driver, wedge
14- driver, 9 iron
15- driver, 3 wood, wedge
16- driver, hybrid, 9 iron
17- 6 iron
18- driver, 9 iron, wedge

Didn't use the 5 iron :(

ike you i havent account for chips or pitches on., but i see your pattern that your either short of the tee meaning lots of long second shots, or your course is a monster.

I reckon it has a lot to do with your course, come have a bash round my gaffe and you will use every club in your bag from full out 4 irons to little 6 irons bump and runs.

I often find I don't hit many iron shots in a round. Could take a few out, but I bet they would be the ones I would need.

Yet iron play is what I practice most. Daft?

We have 4 par 3 holes, the first is a solid 4i hybrid if the flag is at the back, the second it s 3i hybrid with the forward winter tee but can be a 3 or 5 wood of the back ones, the third is only a PW with a forward tee and front flag and the fourth was a solid 4i hybrid into the wind but depending on the wind can be as little as a 7i or as much as a 5 wood.

Why not try just taking driver and a half set for a few rounds.

I'm using 3,5,7,9,sw and driver at the moment, nice and light to carry as well as helping your game.

1-3 wood, 9 iron
2-driver,pw
3-driver,5 iron,gw
4-5 iron
5-driver,7 iron,pw
6-driver,5 iron,pw
7-3 wood,7 iron
8-driver,6 iron
9-driver,6 iron
10-driver,7 iron,gw
11-3 h
12-driver,5 iron
13-driver,3 wood,pw
14-6 iron
15-driver,3 wood,pw
16-driver,7 iron
17-3 wood,9 iron
18-driver,3 wood

doesnt include various chip and runs that i need when i miss the green and doesnt include duffed shots thet id need another club less!!i think i use the majority of my bag, but really depends on the wind and the ground!
saying that, im still inconsistent!!!

if i had a 54, if prob drop teh 52 & 58 and make do.

My home course is 5 shots easier in the winter and shorter, in fact all i used my 3 iron for yesterday was getting my ball out of a 5ft deep bunker that was full off water. :)
try it with out the wedges though amazing what you can get away with.
