Oh dear Rangers

The dislike of Ashley and Co at Newcastle is not entirely related to a failure to spend money. In finance terms I agree with most of the posters here, he has done a very good job. The failures are in other areas. Diabolical communications, truly clueless. Terrible PR moves, changing the name of the stadium for example showed a lack of nous of the consequences. Utter lack of ambition. It is well documented that Ashley has stated at boardroom level and to the manager that silverwear is of no interest. The sole target is Premiership survival. Put out the reserves for the League Cup and FA Cup. Start the season with NO hope whatsoever of winning something. What is the purpose of a club if not to win something? Upon signing foreign players they have been told "come to us, use Newcastle as a shop window for a bigger club". Is it any wonder that players look half hearted at times as they know they will be gone within a season or two. No affinity to the club.

A supporter has to start a season with the hope of progress or silverware, no matter your level. Ashley has taken that ambition away from Newcastle. They exist, nothing more. How bleak is that?

Well said that man.

not that I don't believe you but it seems the antithesis of what any owner would want. Are there links to these documents and claims?

As a club winning both cups and being relegated from the Premiership is a disaster financially. No domestic trophy is worth relegation and staying in the top division has to be a priority.

yes I understand that, what I was asking was was there documented evidence that the owner is saying this as per the post as it seems defeatest from day 1 of the season. Saying it when in crisis is another matter.

It is common knowledge within NE football that this discussion took place. A friend of mine knows someone who was present and has confirmed it. It has also been recited repeatedly by journalists who cover Newcastle. It has never been refuted by Newcastle.

The decision is potentially sound business. The amount of money brought in by the Premier League is huge and dwarfs the money brought in from a cup run. However, from a fans point of view you live to see your team win. You are desperate for that trip to Wembley, to see your team win a trophy. Ashley has no such romanticism, he is not a fan. He is there purely to make money out of the club. That is the sadness of it. A good business but no soul.

I think you are over thinking the "well documented" phrase where the phrase that probably should have been used was "well reported".

Couldn't agree more

A close friend of mine does a lot of work at St James Park and regularly speaks to some of the high rollers and players there, his gaffer used to own shares in the club and is close friends with many on the board.
He just about mirrors what Lord Tyrion says in his post whenever he speaks about that particular part of the club. SO personally I don't need to read any documents I take what my mate says on face value.
That said I think you can say the same for most Premiership clubs, it's a disgrace that they put out youth teams for the only trophies they have any chance of winning! It's like the Bolton situation the other year (it was Bolton wasn't it lol?), some idiots saying their fans would prefer Premiership football to winning a trophy. I hope any true fan would prefer silverware any day of the week rather than scrap for survival with the rest of the bilge year in year out.

Agreed  (I am pretty sure you are right about the Bolton quote as well. Muppets)

Something positive for The Rangers fans was their progress to the semi-final of the League Cup last night - courtesy of a shockingly awful and depressing display by St Johnstone (my club). By all accounts The Rangers were dreadful - just not quite so dreadful as Saints.

Horrible game, looked like St Johnstone thought they were playing the Rangers side of 10 years ago and went for damage limitation and playing for penalties.

That's it - I just don't get why clubs do this. It's what so many Saints fans feared would happen - and it did - in spades.

so, hearsay!

more hearsay.

Nothing wrong with that, but as a lawyer I would only recount evidential facts so I was curious as to a Major football owner documenting these wishes and statements. What he may or may not say in private is neither here nor there.

Of course it's hearsay, each to his own though. I'd rather listen to my mate dish the gossip than sit in silence being a total boring fart.
