Hi,

I have bought a Nike VRS Covert tour driver off a reputable seller on ebay.

I received the club yesterday and there is no serial number on the club.

I dont really have any major worries about the authenticity of the club, and have found posts online about Nike clubs not always having serials, but these always related to older Nike clubs, and I couldn't find anything about this model.

The seller says he has a couple more of the drivers in stock, one of which has a serial but the other doesnt - he says he is awaiting an answer at the moment from the Nike rep as to why.

Has anyone else come across one of these drivers without a serial?

My main concern is resale value - If it should have a serial and doesn't, even if the club is 100% genuine, it is bound to put buyers off.

Thanks
Nick

Take it into your local AG or find a Nike Stockist near you (this could be the pro shop at your club.

Someone will agree to inspect it and possibly return it to Nike for further inspection if necessary. Piece of mind is important not only from a resale point of view but when you are playing with the club.

Not nice if you are not 100% sure.

Do this... Don't mess around with clubs that are bought off ebay if you are unsure

The was variances with cobra last season, stuff with stock shafts for mass-retail all come with serial numbers starting AG... anything customer fitted or sold with upgrade shafts come with a different format, it could be something this simple although I do find it hard to believe that there is no serial number. How would they trace faulty product for recall if required.

I've got a Covert non tour driver and that does have a serial number on it.

Not sure what to advise myself, is the ebay seller a company/pro shop with a registered address or a individual? May be I am a bit paranoid with buying golf stuff of ebay, but slight alarm bells should be ringing if it is an individual. If I am buying anything golf club related off ebay not from a recognised golf shop on there then I'd want to see a serial number.

Hope you sort it out OK.

It was bought from a golf pro from a golf club in the south west of England, so I am pretty sure the seller is legit.
The seller has been on ebay for 10 years and says he will forward an email to me from the Nike rep, assuming the rep comes back with a genuine reason.

either way though, I am thinking if I keep the club, I am going to be stuck with something that people will question, regardless of whether or not I have an email from Nike (as anyone buying the club is likely to question whether or not the email is legit!)

not that I will necessarily want to sell it, but if I do, I dont want to be out of pocket.

So if you'd get peace of mind from an email thread from the rep, why not save it as an attachment and store in the event you do sell further down the line? If it satisfies you, then there is no reason why it wouldn't satisfy the next purchaser in my humble opinion.

Well thats the thing - it would always be in the back of my mind, wondering myself!!!

Not that I necessarily place a great deal of confidence in serial numbers anyway!!

I had a set of Burner Irons that I knew to be genuine - I registered them online with Taylormade, and expected an email confirmation or some kind of response (all I got were loads of marketing emails)

So I rang Taylormade, and was told over the phone that there was no record of the serial number on the clubs - she followed that up by saying that I neednt be concerned though, because that happened a lot and wasnt a sign that the clubs were fakes!!!!

Wont bother doing that again.....

One question... Why on earth are you switching to the Nike Covert, smaller headed, less forgiving, harder to hit tour driver when you have a G25?

To be honest with the speed manufacturers change their clubs nowadays it will be worth chuff all in a few months anyway, serial number or not. ;)

Why worry about resale value ? It's not a car - surely you are buying the club to improve your game as opposed to how much money you will get down the road.

I take it the clubs used? A lot of gear that is custom fit and a special order doesent always carry a serial number, it misses the stamping process as they are put together in a elsewhere in the plant. If your concerned match it up against another the same at a retailers.

The club is new, but I saved a few quid over buying it from one of the main retailers.

Re. the Ping G25 queries - this is exactly why I am thinking about resale value - I still have the ping and love it, but I get enticed by shiny things :) hence I decided I would have a go with the Nike Covert.

I know everyone says go and hit a club a few times before buying one, but it usually takes me a little while to get used to new clubs, so I plan on giving the covert at least 3 or 4 rounds before deciding if it stays in my bag.

If not, it will be back on ebay - where the lack of serial number becomes a concern!!!

To be honest that is one of the reasons I'd never bother buying off e-bay. That and I want to hit the actual club I'm buying. For the amount of hassle compared to the savings I'm not sure its worth the effort and I'd always prefer to give a club pro first dibs anyway. The only caveat to that would be if I went to a manufacturer HQ for a C/F as you normally purchase straight through them

I have two identical callaway razr hawk drivers, both reg flex, both 11.5 degree with draw bias. One has serial number and one doesn't. I get the same results from both.
