New member handicaps annoyance..

The OP says:

A lot of people jumping on this guy, some even saying he is a cheat. That much is not at all clear from what was posted. The implication of the quote from the OP is that the club makes the new members submit 3 cards, rightly or wrongly.

So he all of a sudden goes from been a 12 handicapper to be capable of handing in 3 cards to get much higher handicap (22), but once he gets his handicap his golf immediatly gets better again & he wins (with 47 points playing to 11)? ooook ... Lucky or Dodgy .. you decide

Can I ask though the player said he played off 12, ok that's fine. Did he actually have a handicap though? Maybe that is why he has joined the club. I cannot at the moment get a recognised handicap as my club being pretty new does not have enough members to join the Union. There are people who play there and play off 6-7-8 but none of them have a recognised handicap to take to a new club if they moved. Could it be that he played off 12 at his old club but has no recognised one so he enterted his cards on a new course, played badly maybe due to unfamilarity with the course, and so got the present handicap. Whilst he might be a better player than his current handicap represents surely he is not a cheat as such.

True - my first ever handicap was 16 from three cards - and within a few months or so it was 13. Why? I'd played for 15yrs and had been a member of a club but had never had a handicap. When I joined my new club I guessed that my handicap might be 12 or 13. I guess the story might have been different if I'd played badly for my three cards and got given 22 or something like that. I did win a few things off 16 though - and that's why I got to 13 pretty quickly. If I had been given 22 I'd have been very upset if I'd been thought of or been called a cheat.
