For around that price I'd rather buy 2nd hand ProV1's or something from eBay that are in pearl condition. The AVX's I played this year I bought from eBay but the durability of them has left me thinking that lad I bought them from used some sort of cleaning chemical on them to make them look better than they were. A lot of them I've had to bin off after a single round. Lesson learned I guess, only buy from the actual golf ball companies on eBay in the future.

The ProV1's I've just bought is actually the first time I've ever bought them new and it was only because I had a voucher which meant I was paying £27 for a dozen of them. Even although I really like them after a couple of rounds, there is no way I'd ever pay £47 for a dozen of them. The last few season when I've bought new balls it was either amazing value (Honma-TWX 4 dozen for £78), or a bulk purchase of the previous years balls (TM Project-a 3 dozen for £65 and Bridgestone Tour RX 3 dozen for £70).

Yeah its likely my own (lack of) knowledge on the subject that means I’ll always buy new for £20-£25 over any 2nd hand premium for same price

I’ve used the expensive ones (brand new & 2nd hand) but I play mid-teens h/cap so its only the rare purest of strikes that’ll make a ball spin-back & any potential distance gain a premium might offer a slowish swing speed off the tee is obliterated when it’s into a typical 2-3 club wind, so I might as well get to unwrap new stuff over someone else’s ‘leavings’

I usually just avoid Titleist balls as they're typically priced about £10 more than their equivalents from other brands. This year I've been using Bridgestone RXS which cost me £66 for two boxes. I'm not really sure what the Titleist equivalent is but even the Tour Speed is £70 for two boxes.

Had a quick look to see if any deals to be had for Pro V1s. 4 for 3 still lands at £41 per dozen. That's simply too much for my wallet no matter how good they may be. I don't think I'm good enough to notice any actual difference anyway. I happily pick up the ones that others lose out on the course. :)

I'm currently using the Bridgestone Tour BX - no different to a Prov except price

Having done a swap with Fragger at H4H I'm now using the Mizuno RB Tour ball...all the reviews are good.
Feels a bit softer than a ProV1, flies higher, stops better and I've picked up a couple of dozen for 60 quid
What's not to like..
Just need to offload some other balls..

Used Pro V1x for years until recently after the Callaway fitting I started to use Chrome Soft X LS - I can tell the difference and they seem to have improved my distance and overall game. They are still hard to get in the shops though

At the recent H4H day I grabbed some pro V1x left dash and tried them - didn’t see much difference from the chrome soft apart from the looks

The only thing that I’m not keen on with the Callaways is they don’t seem to be very durable and scuff up quickly

The Titleist chap at H4H recommended me TourSpeed and TourSoft. Not keen on the Soft as £30 for a two-piece non-urethane ball seems a bit steep. It would be worth me giving the TourSpeeds a go though.

Bit disappointed they havent tested any lower market Srixons!
For the most part they only test premium balls, i.e. 3/4/5 piece urethane, with only one or two exceptions it seems.

Affordable golf have the Wilson staff on 3 for 2. Works out 25 a doz for a decent ball

Surely depends how hard you hit them? And where you hit them? 😆
No, thats why they sell them in boxes of 3, effectively one round oer box. But like cars and quoted mpg, we all know its over-optimistic, and that you really will only get 5 holes from a ball rather than the claimed 6. If you lose them, well, thats extra of course.

Thats already overplaying them. A premium ball needs to be changed after about 5 holes. They arent built to last a full 18.
‘Last’ in terms of what? Cover degradation? Out of shape? Decreased compression?
How exactly can you tell when such a ball ‘needs to be changed’?

Got a stash of 'premium' balls to use up as I tend to get them in 2s sweeps or for Christmas presents (beats the M&S or Next divot tool, tee and ball marker set).

I bounce between prov1x and tp5x but have recently found a few Kirkland's on our course and have to say I'm impressed. They do spin a little more but I've not seen any detrimental effect in my scores. If I was to have to shell out hard earned I'd baulk at paying premium prices and would be looking at the Kirklands.

I see they say “soft is slow” but Chrome soft seem to feature well in distance - are they not low compression?

To be fair it's a general statement....the majority of soft balls are slower than the majority of harder balls.
