My H4H 2014 Handicap Challenge

I'll add another fiver if you get down to 9 in 12 months

Add me to that one, bit of incentive. Possibly a bit forward to make a suggestion about what to work on without seeing the swing, but the three areas that I would suggest will help you most are the short game, the short game and the short game.

During a superb (By superb, I mean the course, the people and the weather) round of golf on Monday with Phil the Fragger, Kraxx and Bill 'Editor at Large' Elliot we discused handicaps among many others things, what ours were etc...

Then during dinner as i was talking to Bill the subject of handicaps came up again, with Bill asking what mine was, I told him currently 17 and that I'd only just got it as the competition season came to a close. I went on to say that I would be practicing hard over the winter and come the competition season starting again I would be entering to get my handicap lowered.

Bill asked what I thought would be able to reach, I told him my goal was to reach single figures, he asked how long he thought it would take me to reach single figures. To which I replied this time next year. A small smile appeared on his face and he said that was a tall order to acheive, but I told him I was determined to do it.

As the evening drew to a close and we were all leaving for our cars, Bill stopped me and looking at his watch, said 12 months from now you have to be in single figures.

It's a challenge I am setting myself, to get from 17hc to a 9hc or lower in 12 months, do you think it's posisble or am I just talking pure fanstasy island?

I will get to single figures for the next H4H, I am determined to do it and not if, but when I do, I will donate one hundred pounds to the charity.
I reckon you can do it, Plenty of hard work over the winter and getting straight into it next season I think its possible. You need to play as many qualifiers as possible and don't get over technical if you get the odd 0.1 back now and again. Good luck with the challenge.

The things I will have to work hard on are:-

  1. Putting - I tend to leave things a little short then over compensate and go long, so putting needs a good overall.
  2. Weight Transfer - I have been leaving my weight on my right hand side with the result being a wild high and right slice. Though I have been working on this and it's coming together slowly, I just have to keep practicing and groove it in.
  3. Consistency/Better ball striking - This will get better as point 2 gets better.

What I got going in my favour, apart from my determination to accomplish this goal, is that my teaching pro is very good, very patient with me and a lot of the things I am going through, he went through himself, so he is teaching me through his own experience and not just having been taught from someone else.

how you strike you irons wont play as big as part as you might think.

if you can keep you're ball in play off the tee, get it up near the green, the short game is king. anyone can get it near the green in two. its how quick you get down from there.

honestly, concentrate on 25 yards and in. pitching, chipping and putting! the rest you should already be ok at!

Well after this months mag and Bill's back page article on the Forum and West Hill H4H day, I can't hide or back down, not that I was going to, but everyone that reads the backpage, will know that me, Dave, has said I would be playing off a single figure HC at next years H4H, to quote Bill,

"Presently off a serious double-digit handicap, he insists he'll be in single figures this time next year"

So no laughing at the back, it will be done, I assure you of that.

It also might be worth getting one of them "on the course" lessons, where a pro plays 6 or 9 holes with you. It's not all practice and technical aspects. Good course management could be worth 2-3 shots overall, without even swinging a club. If you haven't got a GPS, get one also. Good luck, BTW and post any updates.
