Morning,

As the title suggests, I’ll be moving to Haslemere in Surrey in the next month or so, and need to start thinking about where to play.

I’m currently a member at Newbury & Crookham in Berkshire, and I do love it there, a hidden gem some might say. However, the distance will be too much once I move.

I know Hindhead is up the road, but I don’t have the spare cash or patience to sit on a waiting list for that, I wish I could because it looks incredible.

I currently pay around £1500 for Newbury, so I’d ideally look at paying that if possible.

Any suggestions welcome.

If you are wanting a members club then you'll be looking at spending nearer the £1800-£2000 mark for this area of the world.

Depends on what you are looking for in a club.

West Surrey had an advert for new members on one of the notice boards when we did H4H. Worth giving them a call although I think any course around that neck of the wood will be steeper than Newbury & Crookahm

Any idea what Hindhead costs, just out of morbid curiosity more than anything.

Full membership for the current year is £2276 with an entrance fee of £3414

They offer intermediate rates if you are 29 and younger where it is £1287 for the year and an entrace fee of £1931

I guess an active community with plenty of chances to play in Roll ups and comps, and not too stuck up, members that like a beer at the end of a round.

With regards to the actual golf; I’m a big hitter, so something with a bit of length, and obviously it helps if it’s aesthetically appealing. I do continue through winter, so a good draining course would be ideal.

Cheaper than I thought to be honest, but the joining fee is always a tough pill to swallow.

I did see membership was full anyway, so not sure how long you would need to wait for a space.

Blackmoor from my experience would fulfill that - very good test of golf and lots of friendly members @richart

Whats your handicap. West Surrey had some long par 4's

Is length all consuming. What about a course with a mixture of holes so you can hit driver on some (at a risk) and other times you have to plot the tee shot. Look at most DP events and not every hole is driver (taking out the par 3's). Wentworth recently is a prime example

My HC is 12 currently.

Distance isn’t the be all and end all, I’d like a good test of skill overall.
As previously mentioned, my current course is short, but greens are small and there’s interesting topography, and it’s in excellent condition. Newbury is very well looked after, and some of the best fairways and greens I’ve played on. I think a well maintained course with staff that are passionate about their work is a big factor for me.

Blackmoor seems to tick all the boxes really, but I think that is full also, and I’m not sure about cost there either. If anyone has the lowdown, please let me know.

If I lived even 45 minutes away from Blackmoor, I'd be doing everything I could to join it. Love that place. Great pro shop, good practice facilities, good bar and food offer and the golf course is one of my favourites in the UK.
I enjoyed West Surrey (weather aside!) but it's not as good as Blackmoor.

I believe it is full, I think they have an interim membership for those awaiting full membership. Subs would be around £2k with a joining fee around £3k.

I love Blackmoor and it is about 45 minutes, just not convenient for me to get to after work. Weekend golf only and I'd b all over it. I want to play West Surrey in the dry as hard to form any sort of opinion given the conditions we had
